Marcoge

The City of Marcoge, called the Jewel of the Swamps, is a city in the middle of The Black Swamp, in The Kingdom of Harnell. A haven for smugglers and thieves, given the difficulty in reaching the city, few bounty hunters and lawmen choose to follow criminals on the run far into The Black Swamp.
The city itself has no official government, but is informally run by a council of thieves, who's edicts carry swift retribution if not followed. Rather than a city guard, merchants and other wealthy types hire out mercenaries as bodyguards and enforcers.
The city does a large amount of trade, as traveling merchants are eager to sell their wares there, as they can mark them up significantly due to the danger in travel and lack of options. This causes great differences between the poor and the wealthy. The poor are often left to make due with what can be scavenged from the swamps for supplies and food.
There are several families of power and influence in the city, including: The Armands, The Brignacs, The Ledets, The Plauches, The Rivards, The Soileaus, and The Wiltzes
The Bay of the Dead Men rests between Marcoge and the ocean.
