Songau (SONG go)
the Beating Heart of Baru
Songau is a large city of over one million people built in the Aibib region on the eastern coast of the major continent of Dergonhad. The city is considered the largest hub of trade across the Cota Ocean between Dergonhad and the major continent of Ethae. Though not the capital of Baru, the nation it is part of, Songau, as stated, in the import and export hub for the majority of transoceanic trade. It is the heart of the east coast trade network bring and sending commodities to and from other Dergonhad nations. Each nations having a deal with one of the cities of Baru to relay goods to and from Songau. This has given the city enough regional power that many would call it such, even with the city-state style government of Baru having no offical central power.
The city proper of Songau is situated on a peninsula of outcropping land. It is walled for protection, even though the city has never come under attack. The city has grown far beyond the city wall, inland. The poor, working class, and any foreigners dwell beyond the walls. There are no restrictions for traveling in and out of the city gate, and there is a deep cultural pride in the fact that the gates have never need to be closed.
The city is built tall to accommodate the population in the he limited land space of the peninsula. This is compounded by the Bayu desires for gardens, parks, and tree covered throughfares and roads. This limited space has pushed more and more families out of the city walls over the last few generations, leaving only the wealthiest citizens land inside the city. A growing trend throughout Songau, even beyond the city walls are apartment complexes where citizens can buy one or more rooms in multi-floor dwellings for their families, to save space in the ever-growing city. While anyone, even foreigners from Ethae, can purchase apartments in Songau, land can only be owned by a Bayu native.
