Shadow Sorcery
Channeler of the Shadow
Shadow sorcery differs drastically from other forms of sorcery. Where one cannot say people are born a Sorcerer, they do have the genetic makeup within to become so. This is due to families having Elf blood within their ancestry. Shadow sorcery is different; there are two paths of this kind of sorcery. The first, as with other sorcery is elven bloodlines. In this case Juhl'are blood. The second is those that choice to venture down of path shadow sorcery, gaining the ability through a dangerous ritual.
All dark elves have the potential of shadow sorcery. Some legends claim its origin is found in the early Juhl'are society. the Shadow is thought to be stronger in the depth of the Night Below and the dark elves use it to its full potential. Juhl'are rarely mate with beings other than others of their kind, and the children of those encounters rarely survive, often dying in the womb along with the mother. However, the rare surviving child of a dark elf and a Human will show signs of innate magical abilities as a descendant of humans and other elves would. These children can wield the magic of the Shadow as their parent can. Many however, never understand their potential. Abandoned and raised on the surface they may learn traditional magic, never knowing it is the Shadow feeding their Casting. The Shadow within these children is different than Daanan. It is corrosive to life and magic. It burns itself out between generations. The potential of shadow sorcery will pass from a dark elf to its half human child, but it is rare to pass it on to his or her children. Unlike traditional sorcery that can continue in a family line generation after generation, shadow sorcery never last past the next generation.
For those without a Juhl'are heritage, to become a shadow sorcerer, one must immerse themselves in liquid shadow pulled from Etu Enur. It is days of agony as the shadows seep into every corner of the sorcerer's being infusing their blood with the Shadow. If the individual survives the endless drowning, pain, and despair, they emerge with the Shadow corrupting and replacing the Daanan within their blood. Less than half of those undergoing this process survive. Most of these have elven or draconic bloodlines that the Shadow 'evolves' into shadow sorcery. For those desperate souls with no hint of these bloodlines, the chances are far grimmer. But the tiny chance for power, where there was once none, temps many to try.
