Clan Goldhammer
Hammerhand Keph
The Goldhammer clan is one of the two Dwarf clans, along with Clan Blackaxe, that make up the kingdom of Dylfinkyn. Though their numbers are smaller, with only around two hundred dwarves in the clan, they are the clan that reigns over Dylfinkiyn. King Balaak comes from this clan.
The Goldhammers were founded by Balaak a century ago, near the beginning of the Novyum Civil War, as a mercenary Corps, known as the Hammerhands. This group was made up of clanless dwarves. Originally starting with just six, they grow over time to the numbers they are in the modern day. When king Wilhelm Alyster called for aid to take back Toemanshire from the Orc, the Hammerhands answered, thanks to Balaak's friendship with Alyster's lord general of the army, Carab.
Though the handful of dwarves that were available to journey on the crusade were limited, being only a few dozen, and they did little on the frontlines of battle, their engineering contributions were vital to victory. Not only during the war, but in the rebuilding after. As such, king Alyster, financially exhausted from war, offered land in exchange for the rebuilding. Dylfinkyn was born from this deal. King Carab honored this agreement after Alyster fell in battle and the two nations have remained tightly linked since.
Most of the Hammerhand dwarves have converged on Toemanshire since, and with the establishment of Dylfinkyn, the group of clanless dwarves became a true clan, under Kephic Empire law. The clan's name coming from the name of their citadel capital of Goldwall, and their corps name Hammerhand.
Nearly all Goldhammers, male or female, have combat experience, having been mercenaries in war-torn regions of Novyum. They are also, however, skilled as blacksmiths, stoneworkers, carpenters, and other construction professions. As work commonly favored by clanless dwarves in Novyum. This has not only aided the clan in building up their own kingdom, but their ally in Toemanshire as well. It is not uncommon to see a construction crew lead by several dwarves in the streets of Tomaton. A rotating garrison of a dozen Goldhammers is also stationed in the human city as well under the supervision of the royal guard.
There is a high number of female dwarves in the clan, at about a two to one ratio. This is largely due to female dwarves, more often than males, finding themselves clanless as their remote strongholds are destroyed in the wars. The men staying to fight to the last name, while the females get to safety with the children. This, and the practicality of a people with a diminution population, has led to the Goldhammer clan accepting of polygamy. Most marriages in the clan are a husband with two wives, though a third wife is not unheard of. This is, of course, looked down on by the clans of the Cutting Mountains, but reluctantly accepted. A dutybound, warrior culture, men of the Goldhammers, are expected to woe potential spouses through acts of service to the clan and kingdom, that show he will be a worthy spouse for not only her, but another woman. Any married man is expected to gain the approval of any potential addition to the family.
