The Dwarf Kingdom

Structure

The dwarves are split into 13 distinct, miniature societies called clans. Each clan had its own clan chief, who was a member of the Council. The 13 clan chiefs were responsible for electing a monarch: the monarch was the final authority over all the clans.

Currently one of the clans - Dûrgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhûin - is banished until they replace their current Grimstborith Vermûnd and repent for their attempted assassination of an honoured guessed - Eragon Shadeslayer - one of the highest crimes possible.

History

The Knurla are one of the only races native to Alagaësia. They started out as separate clans on the plains before its desertification, now the Hadarac Desert.

During the mass exodus of the Dwarves they began to settle in the Beor Mountains as it is fertile and also offered protection from Dragons and other predators. Durring this King Korgan Longbeard discovered Farthen Dûr, a massive caldera that offered great protection for the whole of their race. Korgan Longbeard became the first Ruler of Knurla, uniting the 13 Clans in the formation of a Council. This has been their system for 8000 years, barring Clan Wars. They built the city-mountain capital of Tronjheim out of the purest marble in the following millennia, intending for it to house the entire race in times of trouble.

Before elves came into Alagaësia, the dwarves and dragons fought in many battles against each other. Though never escalating into a full-scale war, these battles nevertheless left the two races with a rivalry.

The dwarves were not a part of the blood-oath pact between elves, men, and dragons. As a result, it was impossible for a dwarf to become a Dragon Rider. During Galbatorix's uprising, however, this proved to be something of a blessing, because the dwarves escaped the brunt of the Rider's Fall.

That being said, they did stand with the Riders and sent many of their warriors to fight along side them against The Forsworn. When Urû'baen fell, The Forsworn flew upon the Dwarven Kingdom, slaughtering thousands and driving the dwarves deep into the Beor Mountains and forcing them to abandon their Western settlements.

Their 42nd King Hrothgar gave sanctuary to the Varden until the marched to Surda before attacking The Empire. King Hrothgar & his successor King Orik both allied with the Varden, in the Rider War, lending their support and army alongside Nasuada.

King Hrothgar adopted Eragon Shadeslayer into his House, making him the first person to become a Knurla in all but blood.

After the Rider War, Eragon Shadeslayer, with King Orik's permission, reworked the pact between Dragons, Elves & Humans to include Knurlan and Urgals. This means that it is now possible for a Knurla to be picked by a dragon to be their Rider.

Calendar

The humans adopted the dwarven calendar when they arrived in these lands.

Territories

The Beor Mountains has been their Realm for thousands of years but that was due to a mass exodus from their homeland plains - now the Hadarac Desert - due to desertification.

Military

There are 2 clans dedicated to the protection of the Dwarven Realm; Dûrgrimst Ragni Hefthyn who protect the borders along the Âz Ragni, and Dûrgrimst Vrenshrrgn who create many weapons and are all trained warriors.
On top of this, every knurla receives at least basic millitary training, the extent of which is determined by their clan as all are expected to march if they go to war (barring the young, the old, those who care for them and those who support the army through farming). Even the priests of the Dûrgrimst Quan are highly trained in the art of weapons.
Most Knurla prefer to wield an axe or hammer when in close combat but the Vrenshrrgn prefer swords, the priesthood of the Quan exclusively wield HÛTHVÍR and the warriors of Dûrgrimst Feldûnost often ride in on armoured Feldûnost wielding spears.
This is on top of the typical archers and javelin throwers of an army.
It is rare that a knurla goes into battle in anything less than full armour as they can run in it from sun-up to sun-down and fight when they arrive.

Agriculture & Industry

All Clans have at least some of their own crops and herds however Dûrgrimst Feldûnost have massive herds of goat that they sell the dairy and meat of to the other clans.

Trade & Transport

Internally

A network of stone tunnels similar to a road network with major large direct tunnels and smaller, messier side tunnels. Almost all of the entrances and exists to tunnels are hidden and seem like the rest of the wall.

Externally

They transport goods to trade with the Elves & Riders by river on rafts, and by cart with the The Broddring Protectorate.

Education

The Dwaven Kingdom is the only nation in Alagaësia with an offical school system.very Clan have rooms in their community hall where the children are taught;
  • the clan's and their nation's history,
  • the Quan visit to teach religion,
  • Maths
  • Dwarvish
  • Basic laws
  • Their clan's passages
Schooling mainly takes place in the winter or when the children are too young to help with the harvest and works of their clan.
This schooling is followed by military training for several years and then by apprenticeships.
Some are hereditary but many, such as the Grimstcarvlorss are picked according to who shows the most potential for the job.
