Aznera Character in Akun | World Anvil

Aznera

The Ultimate Imperial Soul

All who set foot beyond the iron door fall to Aznera’s Domain in Death. Aznera accumulates an army of dead heroes for some future purpose. Hell is torture for those that have forsaken all the gods. Those of noted worship of the Gods are sent to a paradise that their chosen deity resides in. For their service in life, they are treated to being pampered in undeath so long as they’ve truly been dedicated.Godless heathens are sent to Aznera’s mines and worked to exhaustion. Those that have family offer tribute to them during the Golden Star Journey are given twice that in death to enjoy as they see fit. There are entrances to afterlife but they are often hidden, guarded, and enchanted to prevent their use. For Aznera, some of her religious anoint themselves as Holy Thieves, those that steal or commit crime for the sake of others. But more importantly than giving aid, these Holy Thieves are used to gather information about the actions of groups, the choices of the others gods, and to insure that no single person consolidates Akun under their total control. Though most recognize Aznera as the boss of the dead, many still turn to her favor as Lady Luck.

Tenets of Faith

Their main teachings revolve around immortal souls and acceptance, and these teachings are often passed on through weekly temple visits and religious community events. Aznera’s teachings come from an ancient tome supposedly written by the first demi-god and marked the beginning of civilization. Many of their religious symbols are represented in the form of buttons, animals and buildings.

Holidays

Every fall on the first half moon, the night comes alive. Many are called to the Infernal Masquerade. The followers of Aznera, the Goddess of Hell and Trickery, dress up in elaborate costumes, covering their faces with masks to hide their identities. The city is decorated with dark and gothic decorations, like black candles, skulls, and pentagrams. The event starts with a grand parade led by the clergy of the church. They carry a huge statue of Aznera, which is covered in (fake) jewels, and they march through the streets followed by throngs of worshippers. The parade ends in a large square where a massive bonfire is lit. The clergy sets up an altar and begins their ritual, calling upon Aznera to bless and protect the attendees for the upcoming year. During the ritual, the clergy selects individuals from the crowd to participate in a secret initiation. These people are chosen based on their devotion to Aznera and their willingness to do her bidding. They are taken to a separate section of the square where they undergo a ceremony of anointment, which marks them as holy persons of the secret sect. Meanwhile, the rest of the attendees dance and party around the bonfire, drinking and feasting on roasted meats and fiery spirits. They also play games and tell fortunes, seeking the Aznera’s favor and protection for the coming year. The Infernal Masquerade is a time of celebration, but also of secrecy and intrigue. Those anointed into the secret sect are sworn to secrecy and must carry out the Aznera’s commands without question. They are given special abilities and knowledge to do her bidding and spread her influence throughout the land.
