Rock Gnome

Rock Gnomes are the most industrious and mechanically inclined of all gnomekind, known across Aigusyl for their unmatched ingenuity and tireless craftsmanship. Nestled in burrows carved into stony hillsides, nestled among granite bluffs, or hidden within clockwork cities beneath the surface, Rock Gnomes thrive in environments where invention meets endurance. Their homes hum with the quiet churn of gears, the sputter of alchemical flasks, and the rhythmic tapping of hammers shaping dreams into steel.

Short and sturdy, Rock Gnomes possess nimble fingers and minds that never rest. They see the world as a vast and intricate puzzle—one to be solved not just through magic, but through logic, engineering, and a healthy dose of curiosity. Unlike their forest cousins who commune with the whispering Fey, Rock Gnomes commune with invention, often treating their contraptions and mechanisms as though they possess spirits of their own.

Tinkerers from childhood, a Rock Gnome’s life is often measured in prototypes and projects. Toymakers, gearsmiths, alchemists, inventors, artificers, and scholars—these roles blend seamlessly in Rock Gnome society. Even a Common lampmaker might be an expert in crystal refraction, while a jeweler may double as a runesmith whose designs enhance magical focus. Their settlements often bristle with wondrous (and sometimes hazardous) devices, ranging from self-locking gates and talking doors to sentient broom closets and steam-powered kitchens.

Magic is not abandoned among Rock Gnomes but instead folded into their craft with scientific precision. While some delve into arcane studies, many prefer to infuse magic into objects—tools that glow with purpose, lenses that read thoughts, and crossbows that recalibrate themselves between shots. Rock Gnome artificers are highly respected across Aigusyl and sought after by rulers and guilds alike.

They value precision, planning, and persistence. A Rock Gnome may spend decades perfecting a single device or theory, not out of pride, but out of sheer love for the craft. Despite this rigor, they are far from humorless. Gnome humor is clever, layered, and often mechanical in nature—trapdoors that lead to pie dispensers, automata that deliver jokes, or music boxes that recite riddles backward.

Rock Gnome communities are tightly knit, often functioning like cooperative guildhalls or extended families. Knowledge is shared freely, and apprenticeships are viewed as sacred pacts of mentorship. While fiercely independent in thought, Rock Gnomes are also communal by nature, always eager to improve the collective whole through their individual genius.

In matters of faith, some Rock Gnomes revere Aetherial, seeing the divine as the original Architect who shaped the world through intention and design. Others honor minor gods and spirits of forge, stone, or innovation. However, many hold a more pragmatic form of reverence—one expressed through meticulous craftsmanship and the pursuit of perfection rather than formal worship.

Though rarely warlike, Rock Gnomes are far from defenseless. Their settlements are often fortified with clever defenses—illusionary mazes, collapsing corridors, construct guardians, and escape tunnels known only to those born within. When pressed to fight, Rock Gnomes combine clever tactics with engineered weapons, often turning the battlefield into a chaotic playground of controlled mayhem.

At their core, Rock Gnomes are builders of wonders. They shape the world not with brute strength or ancient power, but with ingenuity, perseverance, and a spark of brilliance that refuses to fade. In every ticking device and humming workshop, the legacy of the Rock Gnomes echoes—subtle, steadfast, and unshakably brilliant.

Gnomish Lineage

You are part of a lineage that grants you supernatural abilities. Choose one of the following options; whichever one you choose, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for the spells you cast with this trait (choose the ability when you select the lineage):

Rock Gnome. You know the Mending and Prestidigitation cantrips. In addition, you can spend 10 minutes casting Prestidigitation to create a Tiny clockwork device (AC 5, 1 HP), such as a toy, fire starter, or music box. When you create the device, you determine its function by choosing one effect from Prestidigitation; the device produces that effect whenever you or another creature takes a Bonus Action to activate it with a touch. If the chosen effect has options within it, you choose one of those options for the device when you create it. For example, if you choose the spell’s ignite-extinguish effect, you determine whether the device ignites or extinguishes fire; the device doesn’t do both. You can have three such devices in existence at a time, and each falls apart 8 hours after its creation or when you dismantle it with a touch as a Utilize action.
