House Father & Mother

The House Father and Mother are dual rulers of the House of Crystal. Each carry equal power, with many decisions requiring approval from both rules.
There need not be both a Mother and Father at any given time; there may be two Mothers or two Fathers.
Appointment
New Mothers and Fathers are voted in by the Crystal Children, but anyone who lives in the House of Crystal knows that the backing of the previous Mother and Father are essentially the deciding factor in who will win. Current Mothers and Fathers will "tap" their successor, usually in their 40s or 50s, by appointing them to a position known as First Children. This position could be compared to shadowing or an internship; they serve as both assistant and student, learning what being a Mother or Father entails while actively helping with day-to-day duties. While there have been some close races, a previous First Child has never not been elected to a Mother or Father position.
Cultural Significance
Being referred to as Mother and Father is meant to emphasize the responsibility of the rulers to their people, that they exist for the betterment of others.
