Titanic Languages

The Titanic family includes the bulk of mortal Languages, and is formed of those dialects which are primarily descended from the original language of the Titans, which in linguistic studies is called Ur-Titanic to distinguish it from the family.   Ur-Titanic is a language of creation, with power in its very syllables. It is a precise and concise language, musical and specific, with no double meanings. Titanic languages are often melifluous, and tend to be specific and concise, conveying information on impressions or emotions with clarity and brevity.

Eladrain

Eladrain is one of the two main branches of Titanic, and also the now-dead language of the Eladrin. Like Ur-Titanic, Eladrain is known only in part, from scattered textual sources. It is the more melodic, poetic and roundabout branch, introducing metaphors and ambiguities into the precision of Titanic.   Gontish is a dead branch of Eladrain that was used in Gond. Again, sources are few and fragmentary, but are enough to show that, save a few loan words, it was a distinct language rather than a mere dialect.   Eldari, or High Elvish, is the language of the Union of Eldar, and a sub-branch of Eladrain encompassing all of the Elven languages. Elvish is the formal form of elven, primarily used in legal works and speech-making. Informal elven usually falls into the four kindred dialects: Aldri, Kindish, Marumi and Fentish, the languages of the Steadfast, Kindled, Flowing and Vagabond respectively.   Caralin is the Halflings tongue, usually called simply Halfling since the destruction of Caragal. Caralin is rarely spoken in its pure form, with most halflings learning Rathlin (road speech) or Takelin (wit speech) as their first language. Caralin means 'crag speech'.   Finally, Anthric is a broad collection of dialects used by the various tribes of human. Also called the scavenger tongues, they borrow words piecemeal to expand meaning, but restrict usage to try to control ideas.

Runic

The second branch of Titanic languages is called Runic or Giantish. These languages keep much of the literal structure and rigid grammar of Ur-Titanic, with a more guttural, draconic sound profile.   The Giant language itself is shared across the various Ordai, but there are distinct dialects associated with each of the post-War Sky Cities, in addition to the Hill Giants of the surface:
  • Ashrama (pronouncements of thunder) - The dialect of Titanis, often associated with Storm Giants. It is noted for sonorous phonemes and its lack of direct interrogatives.
  • Sternskai-Hah (stories of stone and mist) - The dialect of Eurosia, associated with the stone and cloud ordai. It is rich and musical, poetic and ambiguous.
  • Harwin (the wave foresees) - The Caldaean dialect is a soft language, with many aspirants and sibilants. It is rarely used, except as a specialist language for healers.
  • Ha'aflam (flame reveals) - The Mecheri dialect is hard and precise. Its short, clipped phonics are used for technical discussion and enchantment, as well as in its home city.
  • Torasa (words of the hills) - The last extant giant dialect - the dialects of the other cities died with them, during or immediately after the War - is that of the surface communities. Considered by other giants to be simplistic and pedantic, it is actually closer to Ur- Titanic than most.
Goliath is a simplified form of Giant, but the Empty Quarter alone boasts five distinct dialects for the main federations of sodalities. Firbolg is similar, but with more Eladrain phonics.   Spoken Pashak is very different to giant, but the written languages are very similar, especially Amatine Pashak, used by mountain-dwelling pashak amat. Marine Pashak, the language of the coastal pashak mar, has significantly more influences from Eladraine languages and petaran slang.   KhazOkan, or Dwarfish is similar to Giant, yet distinct to the point of the two being mutually incomprehensible, despite their superficial commonalities.
