Alathkthi

The infernal armies of the Nine Hells fight hard to preserve their control of the chasm Escharon, for it is the only free passage across the layers of The Abyss from the Plain of Strife to the Dismal Mansions, by which each of the Hells sends their troops to reinforce the Bladed Circle and receives weapons from the Soulforge Foundry.
Yet there is a foothold in the chasm which has never been dislodged. In the latter years of the Colossus War, the Colossus known as Axarn the False Truth was slain and plunged into the Abyss, where it became tangled in ropes and vines and suspended on the edge of the great cataract of the Styx. There, the body became the centre of Alathkthi, the pit of Hanging Cages, from which ramshackle platforms and frameworks depend to house the demonic saboteurs and assassins who strive to overthrow the Fathomless Vertex.
The Hanging Cages are the domain of the terrible Spider Queen Lilloth the Netweaver, whose power has grown with the worship of those drow corrupted by their long exposure to the upper reaches of the Abyss. It is Lilloth's drow who contest control of the upper landings of the Fathomless Vertex with its infernal masters.
