The Royal Society of Magic

The society was one of several founded in 1171 PC after the reshaping of the Empire of Carodin. The full name of the Magic Society was „Ilyolitucar Tendinëan á Kheramur“ often abbreviated to „Kheramurnan“, „The Institution of Magic“. It had a special place in the hierarchy, as the field of magic was the one that promised the most potential development and power gain for the realm. Knowing the dangers of magic, the society was given special privileges to control their experiments. Among those privileges were the right to independently announce and finance the research fields, selecting the responsible researchers for their programs, teaching potential researchers (later developing into several magical colleges) and persecute those who did not work inside the rules of the Magic Society. Funding was provided by the Crown.   A unique feature of the Magic Society were several militarized groups called orders, founded to enforce the will of the society. Their role was to pinpoint any violation of the societies privileges and to stop it. Not much is known about how they executed their duties but it seems as the orders had a lot of freedom and acted independently from local armed forces of the realm most of the time. They seem to have been both feared and held in high esteem. Three are known by name, although several more are thought to have existed:
  • The Order of the Smiling Flame
  • The Order of the Grazing Bull
  • The Order of the Viridian Veil
  •   Both the society and its orders are almost forgotten today, their influence only known by a small handful of people. Most realms condemned the Magic Society after the Fall of Carodinian Empire, blaming its greed and lust for power as one of the key elements of the fall. It is indeed true that the Magic Society became immensly powerful and controlled major aspects of the Carodinian Empire for more than 300 years. Many of their experiments helped develop the Carodinian Empire but their unchecked power (especially the persecution through the militarized forces) led to fear and mistrust. Several failed experiments and magical accidents, often fatal or with major consequences for whole areas, deepened this mistrust and led to the hatred of whole groups, often socially lower ones.   The society was dissolved after the Fall of the Carodinian Empire, although a splitter group joined the Exiles of Gnabanan in their fight against the Successor States. This group, still carrying the name Keramurnan, was defeated together with the Exiles and finally ceased to exist in 1483 PC, marking the end date of the Royal Society of Magic. The desperate experiments, conducted by the Remnants of the Society during this time did however leave scars on the already desolate region of the Plateau of Toqomor. Unpredictable magical effects as well as deadly creatures, said to have been accidently spawned there during failed experiments, make the plateau incredibly dangerous and almost impossible to travel through.
