Kaldaer

The Kaldaer people are the original inhabitants of the Sea of Lyaur, living in their homelands to this day. They are known for their skills as merchants as well as sailors but feared for their short temper and quarrelsome nature. Most of their history was either spent trading with or fighting their neighbours. Fighting between different Kaldaer groups happens on daily basis and is sometimes even considered an important part of their culture. The first encounter of Kaldaer people with another realm was with explorers from the Empire of Carodin. Those explorers were both impressed and dazzled by the culture and habits of the Kaldaer, calling them „Yondäe“, meaning „woundrous people“.   The Olidäe helped the Kaldaer grow and learned them many new things, creating a lasting bond between the two cultures and species. Kaldaer people settled at all areas of the Sea of Lyaur and, after the construction of the city of Anat, colonized the shores and islands of the Ilyonic Sea as well. When the fall of the Empire occured, the Kaldaer stood with the Olidäe but got defeated in the end. This led to the The Expulsion of the Kaldaer, a catastrophy that is remembered until today.   The Kaldaer collectively hold grudges against the successor realms of the Empire of Carodin, staying independent ever since The Kaldaer Rebellion. Trade still remains the main business of the Kaldaer but the experience of the rebellion made the people more war-like. Political quarrels and embargoes by the Kingdom of Édrun and the Empire of Vodjin keep it that way. The number of Kaldaer working as mercenaries or hired guards has increased significantly over the last decades.

Art & Architecture

The center of bigger Kaldaer towns and cities are dominated by the still standing domes and great structures built by the Olidäe. Former meeting halls and palaces were restructured to venerate this race.   Buildings of the Kaldaer are mostly built with a stone fundament, wooden walls and roofs. Bigger buildings may have two stories but most have a ground floor only. Buildings made entirely of stone are rare and reserved for cultural or religious purposes as well as for the ruling elite.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Kaldaer people venerate their ancestors as well as the Olidäe, their overlords from the time of the Empire of Carodin. A formal pantheon does not exist but The Thirteen Rulers of Old, the former emperors of Carodin, have godlike status.
