Session 4: To Phandalin
General Summary
After clearing Cragmaw Castle and rescuing the Dwarven miner Gundren Rockseeker, the party decided to long rest and head back to the town of Phandalin to meet back up with Sildar Hallwinter, who had delivered the supplies to town ahead of the characters.
The travel time to Phandalin was approximately three days, so the party began travelling over land.
The first night, the party was ambushed by a pair of flying snakes; after a bit of damage against Silas, the party was able to swiftly put the snakes down. One snake was literally obliterated by Shoha's sentry gun.
The second night, the party overheard a group of hobgoblins, running with two large sacks over their backs. A furious battle ensued, with the player characters coming out ahead. When the party searched the hobgoblins, they found some basic weapons, and a set of magic Splint Mail (+1). Kirby claimed the Splint mail for himself. opening the sacks, the players discovered two hostages from Phandalin: a human female and a halfling female.
Arriving in Phandalin on the third day, the group successfully dropped Gundren at Barthen's Provisions, and obtained their reward for delivering the supplies. While speaking with the proprietor of Barthen's Provisions, the party learned that Phandalin is largely run by a group called the Redbrands; a former mercenary guild that has turned to petty crime, and extortion to make ends meet.
In search of lodgings, the group found the Stonehill Inn, and were re-united with Sildar. Spending the night in the common area of the Inn, the party learned the following information:
1) The Redbrands are based around the Giant's Taproom in town.
2) Sister Garaele, who oversees the Shrine of Luck, recently left town for a few days, then returned wounded and exhausted.
3) Daran Edermath, the orchard keeper, is a former adventurer.
4) Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a tenday ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him. Several townsfolk saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too.
5) The Redbrands hassle every business in town, except for the Phandalin Miner’s Exchange. They don’t want trouble with Halia Thornton, who runs it.
The party decided to split up to investigate some of these leads. At the end of session, this was the following plan:
- Silas would investigate the Shrine of Luck and try to speak with Sister Garaele.
- Kirby would investigate the Phandalin's Miner Exchange - perhaps he could figure out why the Redbrands would leave it alone.
- Azrael planned to look into the disappearance of Thel Dendrar.
The adventure will continue via individual text over the next few weeks. Stay posted for incoming information!
