Azrael Malakar

The Bound Shadow

Born in the heart of the Askillian Empire, Azreal Malakar knew nothing of magic or the forces that lay beyond the material world. The empire was a place where science reigned supreme, and magic had long been inaccessible to those born there. Azreal (for he remembered no other name) was raised in the shadow of towering industrial complexes and sprawling laboratories, as an orphan within the cold, sterile confines of the "Graystone Orphanage". He grew up alone, another faceless child in a realm that valued progress over people.   When he was fourteen, everything changed. In the dead of night, Azreal was taken by porcelain masked figures, whisked away to the infamous Ironspire Citadel, a fortress of glass, steel, and secrets. There, he was subjected to cruel experiments under the direction of Dr. Shaddai, the empire’s most renowned medical mind. Shaddai’s name was whispered across the empire, revered for his breakthroughs in anatomy, alchemy, and the newly emerging field of bio-engineering. He was a visionary, a man who believed that the human body could be perfected—transcended—through science.

The Experiments

For years, Azreal endured unspeakable torment. Shaddai's tools were precise but unrelenting. Azrael's body became a canvas for dark experimentation, his skin etched with intricate and unnatural tattoos. Shaddai used a blend of alchemy and shadowy magic to craft these marks, binding the essence of the Shadowrealm to Azreal’s flesh. Each tattoo was a masterpiece of design, seemingly inert at first glance, but in truth, they were binding sigils, laced with dark energy.    In the dim, sterile chambers of the Citadel, Azreal’s body was reshaped by these experiments. Tattoos of black and ashen gray, so dark they seemed alive, covered his skin. As Shaddai's obsession deepened, Azreal began hearing whispers in his mind; of something controlling the tattoos that covered his body. The voices promised power, freedom, and vengeance, fueling Azreal’s growing hatred for the man who had violated his body and spirit.   After years of enduring the experiments, Azreal’s opportunity for escape came. Azreal, now fully aware of the dark power coursing through him, seized the moment. His "shadow chains" lashed out, tearing through Shaddai's guards as he fled the citadel. With every strike, the chains whispered promises of power and freedom, though Azreal did not yet fully understand their nature. The tattoos burned with power, but they were not yet his to command.

Fleeing the Empire

Azreal’s escape was bloody and relentless. He cut through anyone who tried to stop him, leaving a trail of death in his wake. His body, covered in weapons that came to life from the tattoos, moved with a precision that was not his own.    Fleeing the Askillian Empire, Azreal became a hunted man. He had been marked as a failed experiment, a dangerous fugitive. The empire sent its agents after him, but they all fell to the darkness that had claimed him.    Now a man consumed by anger and revenge, Azreal Malakar seeks retribution against the Askillian Empire. The empire had stripped him of his humanity, turned him into a weapon, and enslaved him to a force far beyond their understanding. His former life as an orphan was forgotten, replaced by a burning desire to tear down the very empire that had created Dr. Shaddai’s monstrous experiments.   Azreal harbors a special hatred for the empire's ruling class and its blind reliance on science at the expense of humanity. He despises those who stood by and allowed Shaddai’s abominations to continue. Though his path is one of vengeance, he is calculating and patient, his new identity shaped by the cold logic of the empire that wronged him. His new name, Azreal Malakar, was not chosen by him—it was whispered to him by the shadowy voices beyond the veil; from wherever his power seems to come from.   For now, Azreal walks the world as a shadowy avenger, a figure of darkness, his body a living weapon. The chains tattooed on his body keep him tied to a malevolent force beyond his understanding, but they also provide him with unimaginable power. With every enemy he strikes down, Azreal moves one step closer to the reckoning he seeks: the complete destruction of the Askillian Empire, and revenge on all who betrayed him.   Azreal Malakar is no hero. He is driven by a code of vengeance, fueled by hatred, and bound by chains of shadow. His tattoos, once symbols of oppression, now grant him the power to shatter the world that created him—and perhaps, one day, to break the chains that bind him to the Askillian Empire and Dr. Shaddai.   But at what cost?
