Shoha

Shoha hails from the Askillian Empire, where the absence of arcane power pushed society to develop powerful steampunk technology. Raised in a family of renowned inventors, he was immersed in machinery and engineering from an early age. But while his kin focused on elegant mechanical devices, Shoha was drawn to the destructive potential of artillery and explosives. His passion lay in combining engineering and chemistry to create weapons that could rival magic—rune-inscribed cannons, portable turrets, and firearms enhanced with alchemical charges.   However, Shoha’s journey was not without competition. He crossed paths with Ravenna Voss, a fellow engineer known for her ruthless ambition and technical brilliance. Where Shoha sought innovation through unconventional methods, Ravenna perfected reliable, high-output weapon systems favored by the Imperial military. The two competed fiercely, each trying to outdo the other in contests of skill and recognition. Unlike Shoha, Ravenna aligned herself with Imperial authorities, knowing that loyalty to the regime would give her the edge she needed to rise.

Exile and Loss

During a public demonstration for a prototype mortar that Shoha believed could change the course of Imperial warfare, disaster struck. A miscalculation in the design caused the mortar to overload, triggering a catastrophic explosion. Among the casualties was Ashi, a Dragonborn engineer and Shoha’s closest confidant, who had worked with him on the project and shared a deep romantic bond.   Shoha was blamed for the incident, branded reckless, and stripped of all titles and honors. Meanwhile, Ravenna Voss wasted no time using the opportunity to elevate herself in his absence, taking over several of Shoha’s abandoned projects. With his reputation in ruins, Shoha fled the Empire, seeking refuge in Estrania, where his talents—though controversial—would at least find an audience.

Life in Exile and Eccentric Reputation

Now far from the Empire, Shoha has established a solitary existence on the outskirts of the Estranian Lyceum. He lives in a hut modified into what he whimsically calls "a van," an odd mechanical structure filled with half-finished weapons and experimental constructs. While no longer affiliated with formal institutions, he takes on commissions from clients seeking unconventional firepower—mercenaries, collectors, and occasionally even Estranian nobles. His reputation as an eccentric, brilliant inventor has grown, though many caution that working with Shoha can be as dangerous as the weapons he builds.   Though Shoha avoids deep connections, the memory of Ashi haunts him. His designs reflect both his genius and his grief—a volatile mix of brilliance and self-destruction.

Rivalry Rekindled

Even in exile, Shoha’s rivalry with Ravenna Voss lingers. Now the Empire’s chief Artillerist, Ravenna continues to refine the projects Shoha started. Whispers reach Shoha from time to time—of new weapon systems bearing uncanny similarities to his work, only sleeker and more dangerous. The rivalry between them has become more than personal ambition; it is a proxy battle for the soul of innovation, with the Empire backing Ravenna and Shoha determined to prove that true brilliance can thrive without their oppressive control.

Shoha's View on Magic and the Future

Shoha’s distrust of magic remains a defining part of his character, a belief ingrained by his Imperial upbringing. In his view, magic makes its wielders complacent and lazy, while the labor and ingenuity required to create technology cultivate true strength. Although aware that such views are unwelcome in the Lyceum, he keeps them to himself, focusing instead on his work.   As the Empire's influence spreads and Ravenna’s weapons grow in prominence, Shoha knows it’s only a matter of time before he will be forced to confront the shadows of his past—whether to protect his future or finally lay his ghosts to rest.
