The Sentient Races

The sentient races of Aethria reflect the intricate tapestry of the realm's history, each shaped by the trials, triumphs, and transformations of their respective epochs. From the venerable Ancients to the Sundered Races forged in the chaos of the Sundering, each race carries the legacy of their origins while contributing to the realm's evolving destiny. Yet, a profound distinction sets the Sundered Races apart from the others: while all the older races have a patron deity who watches over them, the Sundered Races are orphans, unclaimed by any divine entity.   During the Age of the Ancients, the first sentient beings arose, bound in harmony with the natural world and the magic that flowed through it. The Elves emerged as graceful and immortal stewards of arcane arts, crafting cities that seamlessly blended with the natural beauty of the forests. In the mountains, the Dwarves delved deep into the earth, becoming masters of metal and stone, their creations imbued with unbreakable will. The Dragons, magnificent and wise, were guardians of primordial magic, their scales reflecting the power of the elements and their wisdom shaping the early days of Aethria. Giants, towering beings, molded the land with their immense strength, while the Treants, living embodiments of the forests, nurtured and protected the wild places. Together, these races flourished under the care of divine patrons, each uniquely connected to the roles they played in the world.   The Epoch of Awakening saw the emergence of the younger races, born into a world already shaped by the Ancients' wisdom and creativity. Humans, restless and ambitious, thrived as they built thriving cities and pushed the boundaries of innovation and discovery. Halflings, who cherished simple joys and cultivated idyllic communities, found a unique connection to the bounties of the land. Gnomes, ever curious and inventive, combined mechanical ingenuity with magical wonders, bringing a playful complexity to Aethria's cultural tapestry. Each of these younger races enjoyed the care and guidance of deities who helped shape their destinies, balancing tradition with their burgeoning independence.   However, the harmony of this age fractured during the Time of Unrest. As the younger races sought autonomy, defiance replaced unity. The once-guided younger races questioned the wisdom of their forebears, leading to tensions that eventually erupted into open conflict. Alliances frayed, and the treasures of magical creation became tools of war. This discord set the stage for the Sundering, a catastrophic event that would forever alter the course of Aethria.   The Sundering brought unparalleled devastation, unbinding the realm from its once-harmonious state. Amidst the chaos, the Sundered Races emerged, born of the wild magic unleashed during the event. Aarakocra, with their avian forms and elemental connection to the skies, came to embody freedom and turbulence. Changelings, with their mutable, shapeshifting forms, reflected the instability and transformative nature of the Sundering itself. The Harengon, rabbit-like and agile, emerged as symbols of resilience, their vibrant energy a testament to life's enduring spirit. Yet, unlike the other races of Aethria, these new beings were unclaimed by any divine patron. They are spiritual orphans, shaped by the chaos of the Sundering rather than by the hands of the gods. This lack of divine connection often leaves them feeling adrift in a world where faith is a cornerstone of identity and culture.   In the Age of Rebuilding, the legacy of all Aethria's races converges as they strive to heal the scars left by the Sundering and restore harmony to the land. The rise of spellcasters, a phenomenon born from the magic infused into individuals during the Sundering, marks a new chapter in Aethria's history. While the older races look to their gods for guidance and strength, the Sundered Races navigate their paths alone, relying on their innate resilience and adaptability. This absence of divine patronage both isolates and liberates them, allowing them to forge identities untethered to celestial expectations. Together, all races contribute their unique strengths to Aethria's collective struggle to reclaim its destiny, weaving a future where even the orphaned children of chaos find their place.
