DOMUS MARCELLA
House of the Marcelli · Villa Residence / Commercial Seat · Merchant Villas District, Lacusum
"I have attended the weekly dinner at the Domus Marcella four times. I will not describe the content of any of the four conversations. I will say that the combination of excellent food, the best commercial minds in the interior empire, and a standing tradition of speaking frankly because everything discussed is protected by twelve generations of mutual dependence produces a quality of analysis that the Senate’s committees have spent forty years trying to replicate through official intelligence structures and have not succeeded. The gap between what the dinner table knows and what the Senate knows is the most commercially significant information asymmetry in the empire."
The Domus Marcella is the most commercially significant private residence in Lacusum and the Mercatorum faction’s de facto operational headquarters in the province: a fourth-century villa on the Merchant Villas District’s prime corner site, its upper floors providing a harbour view that twelve generations of the Marcelli family have found commercially useful, its dining room the location of the weekly commercial dinner that is the empire’s most complete situational assessment of the Inland Sea’s commercial position. The current head of the family, Claudia Marcella, sixty-eight, has hosted the weekly dinner for twenty-three years and has conducted the Mercatorum faction’s Lacusum lobbying campaign against the Annona’s grain futures control for eight of those years with the patient strategic pressure of someone who measures success in decades.
Design
A fourth-century villa whose exterior presents the district’s standard restrained prosperity: well-maintained limestone, a walled garden that occupies the full corner site’s second face, windows sized for the bay view without advertising its quality from the street. The interior is the specific expression of twelve generations of selective acquisition: no room ostentatious, no piece of furniture placed for display, everything chosen for the combination of comfort and quality that old commercial money develops when it has been accumulating for long enough to forget it is accumulating.
Denizens
Claudia Marcella , sixty-eight, family head, twenty-three years hosting the dinner. Has the lobbying campaign’s full strategic picture and an independent assessment of the grain futures manipulation. Is one of three people in Lacusum who have separately reached the conclusion that something is wrong with the market, and the only one of the three who has correctly identified that the manipulation benefits a party whose incentives were shaped by the lobbying campaign’s prior eight years of pressure. She will attend the weekly dinner two days before the exchange session. If Pistor’s evidence and Vara’s decoded messages have not been combined before that dinner, they will be after it.
