Verdant War

The Verdant War was a brief conflict between the League of Southern Marches and the Wood Elves of Eryn Sael. Although it only lasted a little more than a year, it served as a critical turning point in the history of Tusnya. It established the predominantly human factions as the unequivocal rulers of the region, and drove the already secluded elves deeper into the forest and away from society.

The Conflict

Prelude

As the Idhren Dominion faded from the region, their relics remained. Though their settlements were left vacant, the bond between the elves and what they built did not wane. Towns and villages located in the southern and western portion of the region remained inherently connected to the elves, and it was only a matter of time before they attempted to reclaim what was originally theirs.

The Engagement

Early engagements between the wood elves and the league resulted in few casualties, primarily due to the skirmish tactics used by the elves. Using arrows effectively allowed the elves to control the battlefield, and draw the heavily armored knights from Riven and Beystone into disadvantageous positioning near the treeline. Fighting became fiercest once the wood elves deployed a full invasion of Heath. The pivotal battle of Heath initially appeared in favor of the elves, surprising Riven and Beystone and causing them to retreat. The elves swept through the village, destroying anything that wasn't elven in architecture, and either slaughtering or capturing any survivors. Utilizing powerful magic stemming from access to the ancient wellspring within Eryn Sael, the sorcerers were able to conceal most of their force's movements. They were also able to receive druidic blessings from Finerdhil, in addition to creating a portal directly to Silvestris, effectively summoning in fey creatures as reinforcements. However, once the elves left the confines of the forest, they were exposed and open to attack from the human forces. Although not nearly as competent in the ways of the arcane, the newly formed league had experience in military endeavors, particularly that of taking a town. Scouts were sent forth to light the forest treeline on fire, cutting off any retreat. They then used massive war machines like trebuchets and rams to batter down any defenses, and ultimately overwhelmed the elves and fey with a significant advantage in numbers.

Aftermath

Since the battle of Heath, the elves were driven back into the forest and have become even more reclusive. The village itself was destroyed, first pillaged, and then left in ruin after the siege. Since the war, the village has yet to be inhabited, allowing moss, vines, and other plant life to overtake the once beautiful structures.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The Verdant War effectively caused the powerful city-states of Riven and Beystone to trust one another, and ultimately formed a confederation with other towns in the region. The League of Southern Marches was born, and spurred significant economic growth as well as power and influence in the Eastern Ring.
