The Reservoir Plains
Geography
The Reservoir Plains stretch across the heart of Southern Tandara, a stark yet vital oasis within the continent’s arid expanse. This vast region is a patchwork of flat, dusty terrain interspersed with rugged rocky outcrops that rise abruptly, like remnants of an ancient, weathered landscape. Directly North of the plains is a sea of parched desert, its shimmering sands hinting at the relentless heat and scarcity that defines the region. Yet, the Reservoir Plains defy the desolation with a unique gift: the highest concentration of watering holes on the continent.
These natural springs, fed by subterranean aquifers, form glittering pockets of life amid the harshness. Encircled by sparse vegetation—hardy shrubs, wiry grasses, and clusters of gnarled trees—they provide sustenance not only to the native wildlife but also to nomadic tribes, settlements, and distant nations. The plains are a critical lifeline, as the fresh water flowing from this region sustains life across countless miles, making it the largest and most reliable source of hydration in Southern Tandara. Today the plains are encompased mostly by the borders of The Holy Kingdom of Stanna.
Despite its bounty, the Reservoir Plains remain a challenging environment. The dry winds carry whispers of dust and sandstorms, and the unrelenting sun makes life here both fragile and resilient. For those who dwell in or travel through this lifeline of the desert, the plains represent both survival and stark beauty, a testament to the delicate balance between abundance and scarcity in Southern Tandara.
History
Countless wars have been fought over this region, beginning long before recorded history. Through the Middle Ages they fought, through the colonial times, and then even in the modern era wars broke out again when droughts ravaged the region. The land bears the scars of the ageless fighting, many bomb craters filling up to become small watering holes off their own as the land heals. As long as humanity needs water to survive, the Reservoir Plains will more than likely continue to be fought over.
As technology has advanced, the primary method of harvesting water from the region moves from horses and barrels to trains to modern water pipe systems. Due to events over the ages, many of these pipes and pumps must be protected by military force due to the dire ramifications incurred by damage to the life giving systems.
