Mk-AP2
Mechanics & Inner Workings
This SMG functions through direct blowback, its short and stiff spring giving it an extremely high fire rate of ~1,500 rpm. While many soldiers professed their love for the weapon over the years, it was more prone to failing due to the buffer area for the spring being too small as well as the magazine, which acts as the grip, being very uncomfortable with extended use. Another potential flaw is the lack of selectable fire modes (later added with the introduction of the AP2/1 in 1947), as the weapon only fires on full auto and posses no safety. Instead, soldiers were trained to not have a round in the chamber until they were entering a combat zone, in which case they would lock the bolt back as the gun fires from an open bolt. This bolt design was also known to let sand and other debris into the action of the user was not careful. To help remedy the issue, paratroopers were typically issued AP2s with their actions encased in plastic that would both keeping debris out as well as catch spent brass.
History
First designed for clearing trenches, buildings, and other tight areas, the AP2 (automatic pistol) was also used as the first paratrooper weapon to be issued to Nydonian paratroopers. Assistant gunners, medics, vehicle crews, and other similar Nydonian personnel were also issued the rifle due to its incredibly light weight and record of lethality in close quarters. With introduction of the AP2/1 in 1947, the selectable semi automatic fire mode additionally allowed for surprising accuracy at mid ranges, leading many soldiers to adore the sub machinegun.
