Shade

Shades are incorporeal entities formed from pure darkness—not just the absence of light, but the manifestation of negative energy and corrupted souls. They appear as shifting silhouettes, vaguely humanoid in form, but fluid, like smoke or ink suspended in water. Their "bodies" ripple and flicker with unnatural stillness, and their presence is often marked by an unnatural chill and the dimming of ambient light. They lack faces, voices, and physical form, but their piercing, glowing eyes—if visible at all—hint at a malevolent will.

Shades are incorporeal shadow beings born of soul-corruption and darkness. They are fast, elusive, and deadly—silent predators that stalk the fringes of reality. Though often mindless or instinctual, the strongest among them possess chilling intelligence and ancient malice. As a species, Shades embody the fear of the unknown, the loss of self, and the enduring presence of death in darkness.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Shades are among the most elusive and dangerous incorporeal undead:

  • Shadowmeld: Shades can merge with natural shadows, becoming nearly invisible and undetectable unless observed with magic or special senses. In darkness, they are almost impossible to perceive.
  • Intangibility: They can pass through walls, solid objects, and attacks from non-magical weapons. Even among incorporeal beings, Shades are particularly elusive.
  • Vitality Drain: Their touch saps the strength, warmth, and life from victims. The effect can leave a creature weakened, chilled, or even with their soul partially sundered.
  • Speed and Stealth: Shades move silently and swiftly. They can travel unnaturally fast through shadowed areas, appearing to teleport between pools of darkness.
  • Terror Aura: Their presence induces a primal fear, often manifesting as hallucinations, despair, or paralysis. Strong-willed individuals may resist, but most feel the weight of dread.
  • Possession and Corruption (Rare): Some ancient or powerful Shades can slip into a mortal's shadow and corrupt their thoughts, emotions, or dreams—eroding the soul from within.

Despite their power, Shades are vulnerable to:

  • Radiant and Holy Magic: Spells or weapons imbued with divine or light-based energy can burn away their form.
  • Sunlight: Direct sunlight greatly weakens or even destroys a Shade. They are night-bound creatures, unable to persist under true daylight.
  • Magical Barriers: Wards, runes, and blessed circles can trap or banish Shades.
  • Name and Memory (Optional Lore): In some traditions, Shades can be weakened or restored by speaking their true name or reminding them of their lost identity—suggesting a tragic origin as a soul that has forgotten itself.

Genetics and Reproduction

Shades are not typical undead raised from corpses; they are the remnants of souls consumed or twisted by necromantic magic, shadow realms, or cursed events. Some may be the result of souls stripped of identity and light—created when a person dies in despair, under a powerful curse, or in the shadow of a world-altering ritual. Others are intentionally forged by dark sorcerers or shadow lords, using fragments of lost souls as fuel.

Some Shades were never human to begin with. In planes of shadow or necrotic energy, they may be a native species—born of entropy, fear, and the void between life and death.

Behaviour

Shades are driven by instinct, hunger, or command, but lack identity or memory. They often lurk in ruins, graveyards, forgotten caves, or shadowy corners of magical realms, feeding on the vitality of living beings. They are silent hunters, preferring ambush over confrontation, and may stalk their prey for days.

Some Shades retain flickers of memory or emotion—especially if they were created from a particularly strong or tragic soul. These rare few may exhibit recognizable behaviors: returning to familiar places, mimicking past routines, or even speaking cryptic words in their old tongue.

Others are utterly alien—creatures of emptiness, whose motivations defy mortal understanding. They serve necromancers, dark gods, or simply entropy itself.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Shades are typically solitary, but powerful necromancers or entities like liches, vampires, or wraith-lords can bind them into servitude. As minions, they serve as scouts, assassins, or spies, perfect for infiltration and sabotage.

In realms or dimensions of shadow, entire colonies or courts of Shades may exist, ruled by a sovereign Shade or shadow archon. These beings may interact with mortals through portals or pacts, trading power in exchange for sacrifices or souls.
