Humans

"Sol, the father of divinity, imparted upon his son Adar a piece of his very essence, and bid him create for it a body. Adar, ever dutiful, did as he was bid. Yet even a fraction of true divinity such as the one Adar was given, was far to immense to be contained within a single mortal form. Yet Adar would not disobey his father. He split the essence of Sol into a hundred pieces. Then tore from his own form many clumps of flesh, and imparted a fragment of Sol in each of them. So was born the first tribe of humans."
— A common version of the story of humanity's birth, according to the Church of Sol.
Humans are the most common and most varied of the sapient species in Adar. They live on every large island so far discovered, and form the majority population and ruling class in most societies.

Civilization and Culture

History

Humans have existed on Adar since before the beginning of the historical record. Most scholars believe that Humans are native to Adar. It is generally believed that the Gods created humanity at the dawn of time.    While humans have seemingly been present in Adar since before the beginning of civilization, whey were not the dominant species in the world in the early civilized period. Archeological evidence, as well as those records that survive from the pre-imperial era indicates that Dwarves founded the first cities and kingdoms. They may even have outnumbered humans for several millenia.    Humans seem to have been present on all continents from at least 8.000 BIC. The dwarves record contact with humans throughout their history. The first human cities appear to have been founded around 6.000 BIC. By around 3.000 BIC human kingdoms were beginning to rival the Dwarven kingdoms in power, if not in sophistication.    According to most the Golden Age of humanity was the so called "Imperial Age" from ca 500 BIC to around 0 BIC; an age of supposed peace between the four main human empires of the time. By ca 0 BIC all of the four empires were gone, or experiencing significant turmoil.    Today humans remain the dominant species on Adar. Humans constitute the majority population in all but a few countries. They rule three of the five Great Powers. Human religions and cultural practices are shared by a great many none-humans.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Human views on the different sapient species which inhabit Adar differ significantly between individuals, and are greatly influenced by cultural and religious perceptions. However, some generalizations can be made.    Dwarves: Most humans regard dwarves as the species most different, and yet most like themselves. Dwarves and humans have lived side by side for thousands of years. It is an accepted truth among historians that early human civilization was greatly influenced and guided by the dwarves. Yet dwarven immortality and inability to reproduce marks dwarves as different from humans, and can sometimes lead to difficulty in understanding each other. Most humans have some experience of dwarves, either personally or second hand.    Orcs: While Orcs may have lived on Adar for as long as humans they were by no means as widespread. Many humans had no knowledge of Orcs before their exodus after the elves' arrival in Evonia. Humans often see Orcs as dangerous raiders, dangerous criminals, or suspicious vagrants.    Elves: Human beliefs about elves strongly depends on individuals. Orthodox believers in Sol often regard elves as divine punishment, meant to scare humans back onto the ordained path. The less pious, or believers in different deities may disagree. Many humans think little of elves at all, since few besides merchants have ever met any.
