The Aetolian League
The Aetolian League was born from the need for freedom against the oppressive Center, and then as a means of survival. Three city states comprise the Aetolian League. Ankon, the diplomatic face of the League, Stratos, the militaristic backbone, and Callipolis, the economic state.
Ingrained in the overall psyche of the Aetolian League is the need to work together and share values while maintaining their own distinct culture. They believe that there is strength in difference.
They are also great wave-fairers, with all of the League hugging the coast. Children grow up knowing much of the sea and its traditions. This lends itself to many customs and behaviors.
Structure
The Aetolian League comprises of three separate city states (Ankon, Stratos, and Callipolis).
Each govern their nations under different systems. However, the leaders of these city states meet monthly to discuss international affairs. These meetings occur at each capital on a rotation.
Public Agenda
The primary agenda of the Aetolian League is to maintain cultural independence of each city state while maintaining consistent diplomatic ties with other city states.
Assets
While all city states have similar assets (troops, equipment, trade goods, military infrastructure), they all have specializations. Ankon specializes in international diplomatic affairs, Stratos in military affairs, and Callipolis trade goods.
History
The history started with the Flight from The Center (421 EB - 423 EB). Due to ongoing practices of the newly formed nation The Center, many of the populous feared for their freedoms and left. They moved westward around the Ricmod Mountains and eventually founded the Capital on Ankon, Pella (423 EB). Stratos and it's capital, Ithaca was then officially founded further northwest around 611EB.
A great influence was moving northward around that same time, The Great Dwarven Expedition. This group of dwarves moving north met with the people of Stratos (639 EB), and shared many customs, military knowledge, and trade. With the these advancements, and strict code of honor, the people of Stratos, and lesser extent Ankon were indelibly impacted. Many historians believed if it wasn't for this meeting and sharing of nations, the Aetolian League wouldn't have survived The War of the Faithful.
After recovering from the plague, The Center decided to reclaim the people that had left them and sent their armies westward. This conflict is known as The War of the Faithful. During the conflict, which was primarily fought around the Ankon border, there were many other historical events that occurred. The people of Stratos met more cultures, specifically the Mountain Dwarf Kingdom of Munavurl and the gnome Nation of Buknifud. Ankon and Stratos held many conferences with these nations to learn newer further employ tactics, technology and strategy against the Center.
With this ongoing brotherhood, the people of Ankon and Stratos's culture was forever impacted that they were stronger together. This was solidified in the creation of the Aetolian League in 663 EB. The conflict was ended soon after in 683 EB with the Accord of Men.
After the First Golden Age, Callipolis was made official with the founding of Edessa in 697 EB.
