The Black Mountains
Encircling the northern and western reaches of the Godless Lands, the Black Mountains stand as an imposing natural and symbolic boundary. These jagged peaks of volcanic rock, perpetually shrouded in ash and shadow, have long evoked awe and dread. For the Disciples of Chaos, they are both a fortress and a resource, integral to their dominion over the region.
The Volcanic Peaks
The Black Mountains are famed for their distinctive appearance. Their sheer, jagged cliffs and spires seem to claw at the heavens, while the ever-present ash clouds that hang over them cast the land below into perpetual twilight. The peaks are dotted with dormant and active volcanic vents, their fiery breath adding an ominous glow to the mountains’ dark silhouettes at night.
The terrain is treacherous and unforgiving, with narrow, winding paths carved into the rock by ancient hands. These paths are said to be haunted by the echoes of long-dead travellers, their voices carried on the sulfurous winds that sweep through the peaks.
The Eye of Emissaries
Nestled within the heart of the Black Mountains lies the Eye of Emissaries, a perfectly circular lake of unnaturally vivid blue. Surrounded by black volcanic stone, the lake’s colour and eerie stillness stand in stark contrast to its harsh surroundings. It is said that the Eye reflects the true nature of those who gaze into it, showing them visions of their past, present, or potential future.
The Disciples of Chaos regard the Eye as a sacred site. They claim it is a gift from their god, a mirror to the soul and a tool for enlightenment. Rituals are often conducted along its shores, with initiates of the Disciples casting offerings into its depths in hopes of receiving divine guidance or favour.
Riches in the Darkness
The Black Mountains are not only a natural fortress but also a source of invaluable resources. Chief among these is black rock, a volcanic material unique to the region. Exceptionally durable and magically conductive, black rock is used in the construction of fortresses, weapons, and artifacts. Mining black rock is a hazardous endeavour plagued by cave-ins, toxic fumes, and attacks by the creatures that call the mountains home.
Other treasures lie hidden in the mountains’ depths. Precious metals and rare minerals are said to be scattered throughout the labyrinthine caves, alongside veins of green crystals similar to those found in the Tunnels of Destiny. However, these riches are jealously guarded by both the Disciples and the monstrous inhabitants of the peaks.
Creatures of the Peaks
The Black Mountains are home to a variety of creatures, many of them twisted by the pervasive magic of Chaos. Chief among these are the Osseous, skeletal avian predators with razor-sharp beaks and tails, and the Scorpenida, giant insects whose venomous hairs are as deadly as their crushing pincers. These creatures patrol the peaks and caves, making every venture into the mountains a perilous undertaking.
Rumours persist of even more dangerous beings residing in the deepest caves, shadowy forms that seem to defy description. Whether these are remnants of ancient Chaos magic or something far older is a question no explorer has dared to answer.
The Black Mountains as a Fortress
The Black Mountains' natural fortifications made them an integral part of the Disciples’ defence of the Godless Lands. Narrow passes and hidden tunnels ensured that only those with detailed knowledge of the terrain could navigate its labyrinth safely. Watchtowers and fortifications constructed from black rock dot the peaks, serving as lookout points and strongholds.
These fortifications, combined with the inhospitable environment and the creatures that inhabit it, have made the Black Mountains nearly impenetrable to outside forces. They stand as a testament to the strategic genius of the Disciples and the overwhelming power of Chaos.
Mysteries of the Peaks
The Black Mountains remain shrouded in mystery. Legends speak of ancient altars hidden deep within the caves, where long-forgotten rituals were performed. Some claim that the mountains themselves are alive, their rumbling and shifting not merely the result of volcanic activity but the breathing of a slumbering titan.
Whether these stories are true or merely the fabrications of fearful minds, the Black Mountains remain one of the most enigmatic and dangerous regions in Deuslair. Their jagged peaks and volcanic heart hold secrets that may never be uncovered.
To climb the Black Mountains is to challenge Chaos itself, to stare into the abyss and find it staring back.
