Zhang Yin Da

An immortal cultivator of the Cold Wolf Sect with a burned out qi point that prevents her from practicing healing cultivation. Wife of Zhang Xiong, and mother of three children: Zhang Huai Shi, Zhang Shu Qing, and Zhang Ke Yuan.

Early Life and Career

Yin Da is the fourth of five children, and the second daughter of Meng Shen and Meng Zhu. The Mengs were a wealthy and prominent sect family during the years of Emperor Longwei. She grew up in an environment of constant comparison to her sister Qi Lianhua, a prodigy and renowned beauty. Aware that life in the spotlight was as much a burden as an opportunity, Lianhua recognized her younger sister's similar talents and did her best to shield Yin Da from being fully recognized for it. Yin Da at times felt very close to her sister; at other times, she felt a great bitterness and rivalry toward her.
Yin Da's relationship with her brothers was less complicated, but came with its own sorrows. Her younger brother Meng Ning was tortured and killed by a demon in 1214, years before the Ascension. He was about the same age as Ke Yuan, Yin Da's youngest son, when he entered the War of Eternal Day. Yin Da harbored great animosity towards demons after her brother's death; it also affected her spirituality and she ceased much of her active practice of Hantzu.

Post-Ascension

After Emperor Zou punished the Zhang family for their loyalty to the old emperor, Yin Da returned to the ruins of the Cold Wolf Sect to tend to Xiong and organize relief for any survivors there. One of the surivors was Ruya Ilkin, who had led the attack, though she was not recognized initially. Yin Da did not have time to object when Ruya sought to repay her by contributing to relief efforts. Ruya stopped Yin Da from dangerously overextending herself trying to restore Xiong's golden core. Despite this, Yin Da still burned out a qi point in her efforts to heal both him and other survivors. She collapsed one morning at her husband's side. She regained her health slowly over the months that followed, relying on Ruya and her son to keep things running.
Scavengers seeking to pillage what remained of the sect's treasures grew more bold and attacked the small refugee camp, nearly overrunning them. Realizing that they could not remain at the sect, Yin Da ordered an exodus to Jiliang, where her older brother Meng Hai had lived with his family until their deaths during the Ascension. They ousted the bandits who had taken over the estate and village and settled in themselves.
The Zhangs Yin Da was furious when her son Huai Shi confessed that his best friend Bai Xue Ying was half demon. Her feelings were challenged, however, by Xue Ying's sacrifices to warn the family of the Fans' impending visit and their capture of Gao Zhong Hu during the Standoff at Jiliang. Yin Da tended to Xue Ying as he recovered from his burned out qi point. His actions led her to question her beliefs; during the following winter Yin Da wrote to her friend Ruya Ilkin with questions about Bayanist views on demons. This led to her eventual conversion to Bayanism during the War of Eternal Day - a process that caused tension between her and Xiong, though they ultimately reconciled.

Family Ties

Zhang Yin Da comes from a wealthy and prominent family in the Cold Wolf Sect; other relatives lived at the capital in the emperor's court before the Ascension. Her promising talents and graceful looks were eclipsed by her older sister Meng Lianhua, a prodigy who was groomed for special scholarly studies at an early age and famed for her dainty, etherial beauty.
