Fall of the Last King

House Valaran had spent nearly 70 years trying to reclaim its kingdom. However, the 2nd reign of House Valaran lasted barely more than 5 months.

One Hundred Years of Strife

The Valaran's attempts to reclaim the throne of Onadara had dominated southern politics for most of the 7th century. While peace returned for a while, following the apparent end of the dynasty in 691, war resumed in 708 as Kendrak Valaran began his military campaigns.   What followed were twelve years of conflict for most of the continent. In 720 DA Kendrak triumphed, destroying his opponents and crowning himself King of Onadara.   This victory, however, had come at a price. Eastern Anidara had been bled dry by over a decade of war. Large swaths of land had been devastated. His realm, while spanning the entire continent, was weakened. A weakness that drew the attention of outside forces.   Beginning in 715 savages from the Outer Lands had begun to cross the border. Using the war as cover they had preyed upon isolated villages. As the years went by more and more bands started to emerge from the wilderness. With each year they grew larger in number and more daring in their raids. Rumours said that some even had begun to settle within Onadaran territory.

End of an Era

In the spring of 721 DA, the situation came to a head. The savages began to attack in force. Entire towns were put to the torch. Several patrols had disappeared and even the heavily guarded gold transports from the mines of Linrir Province had come under attack. Then a scout brought news of a large horde forming near the town of Naedras.   Not only did the settlement house the largest gold mine on the continent but it was also the birthplace of House Valaran, where Galran Goldhand had first risen to prominence. Kendrak would rather see the continent burn then let the savages touch Naedras.   He called all his banners, from the city-states of the Golden Coast, the Hill lands of the West, the windy plains of the north and the mountains of the south. With all his might gathered he marched from the gates of Onadara, never to return. The barbarians seemingly fled before his host, drawing him further and further east.   There deep in the Outer Lands his army was met in battle and destroyed. Kendrak died and his realm, the achievement of over a century of tears, sweat and blood, was swept away in a tide of fire. With the exception of a few city-states along the western coast, Anidara fell to eastern invaders.

Great article. I like the whole idea of this ambush and would really like to read more about what exactly happened. Why did Kendrak keep following the barbarians so far into the Outer Lands? Did he think he had a large enough advantage? How did the ambush take place? Did Kendrak's army get cut off from the way back to their own land? Did some of his army manage to get away?
I'm pretty sure you have plans to expand this article after SC. So I hope this was of some help. Also, thank you for the support you give my world!
