Heath Village

Heath Village is one of the permanant settlements in Eskern, and one of the three starting villages in Eskern South.

What's the name of your settlement? Why is it called that?

  • Heath Village is a town and station in Eskern South
  • Built into a ridge of petrified Heath bushes
  • Possible reference to a berry-picking goddess in an old temple
  • Village identifies it as an official Eskern Cycle Point (villages have to have permanent structures)

How big is this settlement?

  • The Wyvias have a permanant population of ~15,000
  • There is an extra 5,000 with unregistered settlements built onto the Wyvias, mainly Halfwings and Coriniaid
  • The undergrowth is not tracked, it is thought to be quite densely populated but is hidden under leaves and arthropod remains. It's suspected that there are at least 1000, and as many as 10,000 people in the undergrowth at any point in time
  • During the Eskern Cycle, this number doubles, so there is a permanant population of at least 21,000 but easily rises to 50-60,000 depending on the cycle's return

What’s the purpose of this settlement?

  • Starting point for Eskern Cycle (Team Heath)
  • Place of Worship for Rural Deities
  • Research station
  • Wintering spot for armies/expeditions
  • Supplier to nearby market

What's the surrounding geography like?

  • Melancholic Heathland, plenty of ridges and dunes that are covered in bramble, crabgrass, and the occasional tiny grove of gall trees (typically a small community of Cynipina)
  • The Northernmost Village, it is dry heathland due to nearby hills and mountains
  • Some humidity and Sanguine cloud forest plants by the riverbank/estuary

What's the tone or vibe here?

  • It is a beautiful and haunting place, and feels almost "out" of the forest due to the higher altitude
  • The heathland hides that a majority of the base of the buildings and areas here is melted/fused plastic and other garbage, that has been coated in resin and built upon.
  • A lot of resin is used to harden over dangerous topography
  • Law enforcement is loose here because forests are "everyone for themselves", though there is a small ranger and enforcement/caretaker team provided initially by the Heno Empire and later by Clockmakers
  • Even though its definitely just as dangerous as the forest and the nearby hills, it feels like it's safer because the trees are mostly petrified, or so it seems, and in dry seasons it become barren pretty quickly
  • This place is one of the exposed places during Indifferent Suns

What does “a roof and a meal” look like here?

  • Wyva E and Wyva I are both available during this year
  • Wyva E is particularly built for travellers and tourists, operating much like a corporate hotel and mall
  • Themed floors and sections, densely packed to maximize profit
  • Food is made of ground horsetail, lots of breads and berries, seasoned with cassia
  • Small company which forages bones and dead plants to make recycled gelatin goods
  • Lots of root and tuber meals
  • Brewery and tonics made with feremented berries and flowers
  • Eventually a church opens here, though before that they would have to go to Wyva A
  • Wyva I is built for armies and auxilliaries, and will host a few cheap blocks of rooms but mainly service
  • On years 2-8 of the cycle it's often closed to the public
  • Has a gym, sparring area, pool, communal hall, and church
