Thunderbird Mountain Village Settlement in World Behind the Veil | World Anvil

Thunderbird Mountain Village

A lonely, nameless village at the foot of Thunderbird Mountain. It is inhabited by the descendents of Gandayah who were spirited away to the mountain by thunderbirds a long time ago. Since then the villagers have faced many trials which they all managed to survive eventually. The regular lightning strikes are have a major impact on the village and how it was constructed. Every building today has a lightning rod built in. So do any places that could be target by the lightning. Despite all the precautions lightning still causes a death or heavy injury every few harvests.

Legends of Origin

Their legends tell the story of a brave young Jogah who rode on a thunderbird to the mountain. Their people were being hunted by some monster. The bird saved many of them and brought them to the mountain.

History

Layout

Around it is a large plaza with many important buildings like town hall and the museum with curiosities found on the mountain that seem to come from anywhere.     The village is very long as it is on the foot of the mountain and each building is constructed on a terrace. Creating these terraces is a lot of effort. So the entire village comes together when a young jogah want to found a new family as the old home is too crowded. Usually all the generations stay together, but when there are too many children at some point it just gets too much and a part of the family goes out and creates a new house.

Polity

The village is run by the village chief and their advisors.

Names

The villagers use names of plants (80%), animals (10%), tools (5%), positive moods and emotions (3%) and music instruments (2%). These names are given at birth by the village name keeper. This name is kept until the end as their main name though nicknames and role specific names are very commonly to be used instead in many situations. In the village no family or surnames are used as it was never necessary. Common nicknames are based on something that happened to them or based on the relationship they have with a specific person. Nicknames are often not used by everyone, but only those that have the permission to do so.   Role and position based names are given to those who hold that specific role or position and nobody else does hold the exactly the same. For example the village chief is commonly referred to as Zuir which just means village chief.
