Ashfire is the largest city-province in the South Faerie region and the largest city for industry in the Faerie Empire. The city and the surrounding region is currently planning to form its own independent country following the dissolution of the Faerie Empire.

Demographics

Ashfire is incredibly diverse, but still has a large Fae(species:430dd5c2-4377-45d0-bc58-cf8b9cf10649)/@[Civil Fae majority. Most of the population are workers in the cities thousands of factories.

Government

As of the dissolution of the Faerie Empire, Ashfire was ruled by a governing council and Lord-Governor, like all provinces in Faerie. After independence is achieved, democratic elections will be held and a slightly different council system will be put in place.

Defences

As the main industrial city of the Faerie Empire, Ashfire has been a very important and well defended city for a long time. The wall was first built prior to it becoming part of the Faerie Empire, but was redone when it's status as an industrial city made it a prime target in the Empire's war with Glacia.   The wall is ten meters thick and made of heavily enforced stone. There are also cannons mounted at several points and many guards towers to house archers and mages.    Additionally, the city has both a city guard to deal with internal issues and minor day to day threats, and a city army which protects the entire region.

Industry & Trade

As previously stated, Ashfire is the largest industrial centre in the Faerie Empire. It has a massive amount of trade all over the continent and is quickly out pacing many of Glacia's top cities for both amount and variety of industry.

Infrastructure

Ashfire is most famous as the City of a Thousand Factories. As of the end of the Faerie Empire, it actually had over 3.000. In addition, Ashfire has a great deal of industrially targeted infrastructure, and a spectacular city wall that has been expanded many times to encompass the whole of the city.   One place where Ashfire's infrastructure falls short is in providing for it's massive underclass. One of the stated goals of the Ashfire Council For Democracy and Liberty's pre-election temporary government is to work to provide drinking water and safe shelter to the poorer areas of Ashfire.

Districts

Ashfire is broken into 5 distinct districts: the Governor's' District, the Academics' District, the Merchants' District, the Factory District, and the slums.

The Governors' District

The Governors' District is located along the northern wall of Ashfire, as far away from the citiesthousads of factories as one can possible get. As the name suggests, the Governors' District is the wealthiest district in Ashfire, and also where the majority of government buildings are.   The Governors' District existed historically as the palace district when Ashfire had it's own kingdom. Since then, the historical district has be completely replanned and redone to suit the needs and pleasures of the wealthiest individuals in Ashfire. The Governors' District has mansions, parks, fountains, museums, libraries, and anything else a wealthy counselor or businessperson would need.

The Academics' District

The Academics' District is located just to the southeast of the Governors' district and closer to the factories. Here is where you can find Ashfire's universities, libraries, bookshops, and highly educated professionals like mages and doctors. The main Order of Sky temple is also in this district. Most of the professionals who work in this district live above their offices.

The Merchants' District

The Merchants' District is located in the middle of Ashfire, and is built along the northern side of the river. This is where merchants come to trade and business is done. This is also the district in which you are most likely to find inns and restaurants. Similar to the Academics' District, most of the people who work here full time live above their shops.

The Factory District

The last officially recognized district in Ashfire is the Factory District, occupying much of the space on the southern side of the river. As the name suggests, this is where the city's industry is located. The district is full of factories, warehouses, and everything else that is needed to keep the various manufacturing industries alive.

The Slums

The slums make up the southern fringes of the city and spill out beyond the walls. These are where the large portion of the workforce that can't afford to live legally in Ashfire have settled. While the current government has largely tried to pretend they don't exists, conditions have improved recently as the Order of Sky gets more involved in Ashfire and Queen Oriole pushes for more aid in the region. Still, one of the biggest points of the planned transitional government is to improve the infrastructure and quality of life for the people living in this area.

History

Ashfire was first founded along the banks of the Ashfire River in the pre-empire era. Due to its location, the city and the small kingdom that formed around it were largely unaffected by the Emberton Empire or the early years of the Faerie Empire.   Ashfire began largely as a farming settlement, but with valuable metals found nearby and the growing influence of Gr/lacia on the region, Ashfire began to grow as a trade hub. Because of this trade, Ashfire quickly became a centre for learning and invention, which lead to a much smaller version of the industries seen in Ashfire today.   As the Faerie Empire's conquests progressed further into Southern and Central Faerie, weapons and armour became a booming business for Ashfire. Supplies made in Ashfire kept many resisting Kingdoms free for years longer than they would have otherwise lasted. And, while selling war supplies to the Empire was made illegal out of fear that Ashfire could be conquered soon, many merchants willing to bend the law made fortunes supplying the Empire and their allies.   Soon enough, the Empire did conquer Ashfire, and set it's numerous early factories to work supplying inventions and weapons to be used against the more technologically advanced Glacia. Despite being a major target in its early years as part of the Empire, the fast expansion during that time meant Ashfire was soon quite thoroughly surrounded by other parts of the Empire.   Ashfire was briefly a part of the South Faerie Empire during the Second Faerie Civil War. They were conquered by General Eternity fairly early on and have remained part of the Faerie Empire he created since.   However, there have always been grumblings in Ashfire about independence, and as the crisis in the cities slums and the larger issues with the Empire as a whole grew apparent, those grumblings got louder. As the Faerie Empire is being dissolved, a group known as the Ashfire Council for Democracy and Liberty has taken the reigns in designing a new Ashfire. The Council has created a 24 step transition plan which will soon be presented at the dissolution hearings in Emberton. As part of this plan, the Council will set up a temporary transitional government to address numerous humanitarian, environmental, social, and economic concerns in order to form a functional democracy.
