    Oil prices reach $456 per barrel
    Financial Event

    Oil prices across the world soared to its highest point in history, with crude oil going for $456 per barrel. The prices dropped gradually till its next spike nearly a decade later. However, the 2047 spike was the first major sign of the upcoming Energy Crisis of 2065. Though most countries did take action, the rate of depletion of crude oil was faster than expected.

    OPEC dissolves
    Political event

    The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries dissolved as Russia and the United States of America became the largest oil-producing countries in the world. The most oil was being produced under offshore drilling projects under the United Nations collaborations. Under this new arrangement, it became impossible for the already exhausted oil reserves of the OPEC countries to produce oil at a profitable rate, thus resulting in the collapse of the organisation.

    The United Nations breaks down
    Era beginning/end

    The United Nations collapsed in 2060 as a culmination of rising tensions between the United States, Canada and the Russian Federation. The United States of America pulled out of the United Nations, along with the United Kingdom. This came after decades of condemnation after repeated breaches of the United Nations Charter. The Russian Federation followed suit, accusing the United States of "fostering international hate". Canada followed within the next few weeks, citing the United Nations could no longer "check injustice". Italy and Germany withdrew on the same day as Canada. Post-Italian withdrawal, there was a cascade of countries pulling out of an "obsolete" organisation.

    The New Orleans Project
    Discovery, Scientific

    The United States of America launched the New Orleans Project in a bid to discover an alternative source of energy. The result was the famous substance O-142, or as it is commonly known American Oil. The United States of America slowly shifted to American Oil over the years and when the Energy Crisis of 2065 hit the world, they were able to salvage their country with minimal losses. Professor John Doe was the mysterious 21-year old prodigy who led the New Orleans project. His real name and identity are, as of now, a mystery.
