The United Nations breaks down

Era beginning/end

2060A.D.
27/9

The United Nations collapsed in 2060 as a culmination of rising tensions between the United States, Canada and the Russian Federation. The United States of America pulled out of the United Nations, along with the United Kingdom. This came after decades of condemnation after repeated breaches of the United Nations Charter. The Russian Federation followed suit, accusing the United States of "fostering international hate". Canada followed within the next few weeks, citing the United Nations could no longer "check injustice". Italy and Germany withdrew on the same day as Canada. Post-Italian withdrawal, there was a cascade of countries pulling out of an "obsolete" organisation.

The United States of America had slowly reduced its funding to the United Nations as countries had repeatedly condemned US-sanctioned acts of aggression. The first such act had been Operation Mousehole. Russian influence in the Security Council, as well as the UN as a whole, grew considerably. Canadian influence also skyrocketed. By 2030, Vladmir Putin, the then-President of Russia, was easily the most influential man on the planet due to his standing in the United Nations.   The UN's security powers had slowly lessened. Countries began to prefer domestic, national and bipartite solutions as opposed to approaching the United Nations. On 16th September 2060, the United Nations was supposed to pass a vote which would strip the United States and the United Kingdom of their permanent membership in the Security Council. On 9th September, a week before the vote, the United States of America stated that the United Nations was now "obsolete" and withdrew from the organisation. US-allies quickly followed suit. By the 16th, the strength of the United Nations had been reduced to below 100 nations. The Russian Federation responded with deep anger, stating that the United States of America was a "nation of cowards" and it "fostered international hate". These comments were followed by the Russian Federation stating that the UN was no longer able to hold the guily accountable and that better laws in accordance with basic national identity had to be enforced. As the Charter was opposed to direct military action, the Russian Federation stated it chose to no longer be bound by such a document.   Though Canada tried to continue the United Nations in accordance to the previous principles, repeated US aggression as well as increasing oil prices prompted it to demand, unsuccessfully, the adoption of a new UN Charter on 10th October 2060. The vote is said to have failed due to Canada's emphasis on nuclear options being considered a viable method of war against breaches of international peace in the new Charter. Canada pulled out a few days later. The then-Canadian Prime Minister Peter Hardman quoted, "The United Nations was a relic of peacetime. A relic of a time when the world was not eager to sacrifice lives and morals for petty gains. Those times have passed. Agents of Chaos seek to spread fire and burn the world down. The UN can do nothing. It does not check injustice, merely prevents the just from defending their honour. Fire must be fought with fire. The United Nations is an idea. It lives on as an idea. In real life, however, it is time for us to move forward. We no longer live in a time of peace and morals. Immoral nations have made it necessary for us to take up arms. Canada will not be weak."   By 20th October, 2060, the United Nations had a bare 25 member states, the most powerful of them being Italy and Germany. The 25 states remained only to plan a formal dissolution of the United Nations. On 24th of October, 2060, the United Nations was formally dissolved. A plaque was put up in Berlin with the following words, "We raise this monument to remember an organisation of peace. On this 24th day of the 10th month of the year 2060, we mourn the passing of a time when the world stood united. On the 115th year of its formation, the United Nations of the world became divided on this day. May we unite again, when the time is right."
