Werewolf

A werewolf (Old English: werwulf, "man-wolf") (plur: werewolves) is a cathemeral sapient hominids, biologically related to humans. They are also known for their great strength, keen senses and impulsiveness.   They may be referred to as Nagual, meaning werejaguar, in some regions of the New World.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Werewolves appear to be nearly identical to humans , with the exception of elongated predator-like canines, suited for tearing into flesh, and elongated ears ending in a slight tip.  Their nails are dark and thick.   Most werewolves are physically taller and more muscular than humans.

Biological Traits

Werewolf metabolisms are very efficient, and combined with their highly developed musculature, grants them incredibly levels of power and energy. It is widely believed that this is also responsible for their longevity compared to humans. This increased metabolism is in great deal due to the high hormonal levels their body produces. These high hormonal levels are mostly responsible for their renowned impulsiveness though experience and cognitive maturity can reign in these impulses. Female werewolves tend to be calmer and less susceptible to outbursts.   Despite their incredible metabolism, the average werewolf is no more tolerant of alcohol than the average human.

Genetics and Reproduction

Werewolves are a gonochoric species, dividing into male and female sexes. Most werewolf reproduction takes place by internal fertilization via sexual intercourse, but can also occur through assisted reproductive technology procedures. The average gestation period is 36 weeks, but a normal pregnancy can vary by up to 13 days.   Like most non-hybrid parahuman, werewolves have a very low fertility rate compared to human, which greatly limits their numbers.   They are also capable of reproducing with human and wolflings.   Werewolves have a male-to-female ratio of 1.00 at birth.

Growth Rate & Stages

These represent the average development stages for werewolf children.
  • Infancy 0-12 months
  • Toddler 1-3 years
  • Childhood 4-9 years
  • Puberty 10-16 years
  • Adulthood 17+ years

Dietary Needs and Habits

Werewolves are omnivores but their metabolisms requires large amounts of animal protein to sustain them.  Most adult werewolves will consume twice as much in a day as their human counterpart.

Biological Cycle

As cathemeral beings, werewolves have developed circadian cycle mechanisms that allow them to cope with switching sleep cycles to allow them to be active both during the day and night.  They also can forgo sleep for up to 3 days with little effect on their systems, though most will sleep 6 to 8 hours on a daily basis.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Werewolves possess enhanced canines, that can allow them to tear flesh.     86.3% of werewolves will have yellow eyes, 13.6% will have deep blue eyes and 0.1% will have purple eyes.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Werewolves possess both a heightened sense of smell and hearing compared to humans.   Their sense of smell is as powerful as their other primary senses and some even use it in a professional context with the same certitude as if they had seen or heard something. With intensive training, they can smell the following:
  • a single drop of blood in an average sized room
  • if someone has been in contact with gunpowder in the last 24 hours, after taking a thorough shower.
  • if someone is ill or suffers from medical conditions such as cancer or syphilis.
  • the scent of a fugitive who crossed paths with other people in the last 12 hours.
Their sense of hearing is also considered astounding when compared to humans. Many werewolves can hear the following:
  • Ultrasonic frequencies (up to around 40,000Hz)
  • The heartbeat of a person within 2 meters when the ambient noise level is considered normal (around 40dB)
  • Earthquakes up to several minutes before they occur.
It should be noted than without some training, these senses can easily be overwhelmed by everyday events, and they become a source of distraction instead of a source of perceptiveness. Some werewolves turn to substances such as alcohol to deaden their senses, in order to help cope with the increased stimuli.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Modern werewolves attempt to best of their capabilities the trends and fashion standards mainly set by humans.   Male werewolves will sport a mustache and/or beard as soon as they are capable of having one. Most will keep their hair long, but many professions require them to be tied for safety reasons.   Many female werewolves of middle class and above will make use of depilatory concoctions and electrolysis to assist in the removal of any facial and body hair that is perceived as undesirable. This phenomenon is more prevalent in the urban centers than in the rural areas.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Werewolves views on human and parahuman vary by individuals. The current generations are attempting to build bonds of trust and friendship, however centuries of mistrust and animosity still have a lot of influence over how interspecies relations go.   There is a lot of prejudice in regards to humans in general but werewolves are often willing to cooperate with and even follow a human that they perceive to be worthy.
