Hydras Follow Us

by Paladin of the Ancients Reinys Ylyndar

If the hydra symbol found in the ruins of the camp we stumbled upon in the Depths was not unsettling enough, the information we found in the secret libraries of Kestel would. Something was wrong with this city, it raised the hair on the back of my neck and unsettled Yldris more than I had ever seen. But it would be our home for a few days as we waited for the others to settle in and Craea would soon find us trouble here where it did not need to be found. The library that Squall wished to dig through for information brought a history lesson that was more unsettling, putting context to the hydra symbol that we had seen in the Depths.

A book of history caught our attention in the unused library, one that spoke of the area and Kestel and a tumultuous history that had removed the name Mistfang from the ruling family and their crest to change from that about a hydra. In the last century and some, Kestel had been forced to endure things that were someone reminiscent of the Eldritch War, something that very quickly had me up in arms. A hydra attack had occurred nearby and was ended when the headmaster of the Starlit Tower sealed the behemoth away and built a city on top of it, but the signs we saw in the library pointed towards the powers that be in the city wishing to release the beast.

Of course, as we thought about what course of action to take on those musings, Craea quickly found other trouble and I would have to wait and see what the next day would bring. But Craea's trouble was on a new level this time as she was drawn into poor instincts involving children. Why did our problems always stem from her love of children and her inability to think properly in instances where they were involved? Again it became so obvious that those I traveled with were not soldiers and lacked the discipline instilled in me since I was a mere child myself. Some days it grated on my last nerve, but with discipline came patience for those that did not understand my way of life, so I continued on, with as much of a level head as I could keep.

The problem with the recon mission that Craea had proposed was that it dipped into territory that questioned my morals. We had no reason to get caught up in that mess, but I could not in good conscious send them out without someone that would have their back. Khalsinn and Miz were the two I turned to, and when I explained the situation, the drawing of straws to see who would be forced to go was comical. As Miz left, I wished them good luck before I retired to the room Syndra and I shared to discuss what could be done about the situation in Kestel.

Syndra and I made plans to send messages to the Queen and Cross, but she would require some study time first. As the night wore on, I just wished for something to go simply and not to be drug into things that we should not be, but our menagerie of members made that near impossible. We could only see what the next days would bring and pray to the gods that a favorable outcome was in our future.
