Divine Intentions

by Paladin of the Ancients Reinys Ylyndar

My mother, the enchantress, the crafter, the woman who in 300 years of my life has yet to stop worrying about me. She is most likely my closest friend and greatest supporter, but her words and gifts of wisdom are nearly impossible over this great distance. That is why the surprise of her gifts, brought by Syndra, was such a great one. I had expected to spend the next few months alone, away from my family, but Mother had sent her apprentice, laden with the ornaments of paladins, to ease some of my burdens.

Syndra also needed to face the world and learn how the Order found its place within it. The intricate metal cuffs she wore bearing the symbol of the Order was proof enough, but she also bore intricately crafted items for both Yldris and I, a testament to Mother's handiwork. My items, much like Syndra's, were woven from the love and craftsmanship of Mother's hands, glistening in the colors of lustrous metals. While not imbued with arcane power, the items were enchanted with Mother's embrace, her way of supporting us on our journeys.

The ornaments of a paladin bore the mark of the Order, a large tree with many branches. The symbol was etched delicately into metal bracers, a set for me that matched Syndra's, although not nearly as delicate as hers. A leather harness also held the mark, a replacement for the knotted ropes that held the packs on Yldris. The items were so simple, yet I knew the detail, the curling vines of ivy and the floating leaves inlaid in both had taken Mother days.

These gifts came at the best of times, arriving shortly before I would spend my days studying at the Starlit Tower. That had been my original goal in coming to Stronghold, but it was something I had put off for weeks as I became accustomed to the Human Empire and its many quirks. Joining the Dagger Guild had also slowed my progress on the things that mattered most to Father, but I was no longer ashamed of the path I had started on as I read the letter that accompanied Mother's gifts.

Leave it to an enchantress to realize that her daughter would stray from her set path the moment she found freedom from her overbearing Father and brothers. The adorned items were her blessing to continue on this journey of freedom, to find and know myself in a place where the men of my family were not. The ornaments of a paladin were the key to this freedom, along with the party I traveled with and the things I learned in the class at the Starlit Tower, Divine Intentions.

The path I started on now was divinely pointed, a path towards understanding the oath I swore. While Mother's gifts were small, they outfitted Yldris and I for the unknown journey ahead.
