Dreams of Sidonius

by Lady Emmeline d'Garin

Eleanor called him Grandfather. He knew her family history. She was named for “Eleanor” of the distant past:

Sidonius: "Oh, you mean that one of your ancestors came from here? Yes, that was first Eleanor, your namesake. That is true, from your mother's side. As you know, her real name is lost to history but it is said Eleanor was the child of a centurion who's family was shipwrecked here. She went alone in defiance of her family to Eteria itself and to see the world. It was said she had the spirit of her native mother and the strength of her father. I've told you this, but since you asked, she was a seeker like me. What you probably don't know is that she also was of magic blood and manifested magics due to a connection to the elves and perhaps deeper in history to the spirits of Arcadia where the elves came from and now slowly return.”

And then he said:

He said, "Because your mother was a virgin oracle of Astra, the goddess of the stars until her 35th birthday she had only you as a child. She was an only child of an only daughter going back as far as records show. You have plenty of cousins on your father's side, but your mother's legacy is yours alone."

"You know, you've given me pause. Perhaps you should investigate that legacy? You've been well tutored and are an aspiring scholar in your own right, despite your age. I've found villagers here have deep cultural memories. Perhaps they have stories? Perhaps an elf on the far side of the isle even met Eleanor or her family. Perhaps you have cousins living here still? Regardless, you should document the cultures here as they are today. Write about them. Capture their stories, like good man Sagus and I have. Someday, on this island in the bay, you may publish your book. I'll even ship a copy to the Imperial Library and Archives. What do you say?"
