Personal history
The Merchant simply seems to have appeared over the past few years. Exactly how old he is and wher ehe is originally from is unknown. A slight accent from somewhere in the British Isles seems to slip out once in a while.
What is known is that he regularly trades in everything, literally everything. Nothing seems to be off-limits as long as its asked for correctly & for the right price. Also, he seems to surupticiously steal almost anything especially if it's priceless magical items.. There's notthing off-limits and recent rumour has it he rexcently stole huge sacred stones from a Dwarven temple recently before delivering it to the buyer somewhere in the Alps.
One persistant story is thathe always seems to have a small but dangerous collection of 'cursed' magic items in his possession. Many who buy these disappear sometimes leaving behind a gory aftermath. Even if this is true nobody seems to be able to place it on him. He regularly travels around seemingly to prevent himself being cornered and captured. The only thing about this is he seems to go through Orleans on a regular basis, usually once a month at least. Why, no=one can say and those that see him it is down in the rougher end of the city.
He has been seen the odd time outside of the Frankish Empire too. He has been spotted in Anglo-Saxon Britain, Novgorod, the Italian Penninsula, the Middle East as far south as Egypt, and Scandinavia. Most people also seem to distrust him, though they seem to still do business with him. Many local nobles seem to invite him in breifly to trade, though to trade in what is not known.
Nobody seems to know his actual name either and always refer to him as The Merchant. Also, nobody can tell where his permanent base is either. Some think it may be a small personal pocket dimension. Where or when he accesses it is anybodys guess. On top of it all he never seems to be short of coin, and even takes a drop in price if "certain items" are asked for.
