Accessibility -UI Streams Twitch Announcements Settings Advertisements
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
The ability to dismiss announcements and advertisements for Twitch streams and other community content. Currently whenever there is a stream or other announcement, it it impossible to remove the large (and often flashy/colored) announcement box that dominates the top of most pages - particularly the dashboard and when editing an article.
This is problematic for two reasons: the first being that users pay for a "no advertisement" experience, that should include advertisements for WorldAnvil itself. The second reason is for accessibility - the announcements can be distracting and take up precious screen space, and since they are not dismissable or better yet opt-out this annoyance can be compounded. As a person with ADHD, it is extremely important for my own writing process to remove any and all possible forms of distraction, otherwise my productivity declines.
Previously it was possible to opt out of stream announcements by adding the following to thhe world's CSS page: .stream-announcement { display: none; }
However this appears to no longer work.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
There should be a setting option for all users (or at a minimum those with a paid subscription) to opt-out of announcements. Additionally, there should be a button to close any announcement that is not opted-out from. This is necessary if WorldAnvil would like to continue to enhance their service's accessibility to all users. Having the opt-out setting would allow users to focus on their worldbuilding - and still engage with community content when they want to seek it out. For users who wish to still receive the advertisements, having a button to close the announcements would help remove the distraction after they have seen it; no one needs to be reminded on every single page that there is a twitch stream going on.
What are other uses for this feature request?
Being able to opt out from different elements, or close them, on the site would be very useful. After seeing a PRO TIP or other alerts for the 2nd year in a row, users get the message and understand. It would be very useful to be able to close out the tips/announcements/advertisements that you have already seen, so that your screen is not cluttered by them.
While this may seem like not a big deal to a lot of people, for someone with ADHD these small, colorful elements can be extremely distracting and pull focus away from the purpose of this service: worldbuilding.
The Team's Response
Removed the "Accessibility Feature: " and "and Twitch Advertisements" part of the header.
In response to poster and comments
The global announcements are not there only to inform about streamed eventts but also to inform about imminent important updates, like the website going down so you can save your work etc. It's highly suggested you do not try to remove them
The reason the class that used to be there was removed. There were 3 incidents of people losing several thousands of words (before autosave was a thing) because they have hidden a global notice.
This is not an accessibility feaature. and as someone with a visual disability I feel quite strongly when people try to use the word "accessibility" when what they actual mean "I just don't like it" - Accessibility should not be an excuse.
It is not an advertisement it's community news. If you do not want to see it, remove community features so you can be isolated from the community events.
This has nothing to do with us making money and more to do with us making sure people have contact with us when they wanted. I completely understand that many of you do not wish to see us / talk to us, and it's perfectly fair but this is not a matter of monetization.
Actions to be taken
1. It wlll be made not to appear when you are in focus mode (immediately)
2. A button to dismiss it will be added (probably for the duration of the stream + some hours).
