images -permissions private copyright infringement
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
Currently, private images on public worlds are still displayed when used as article covers, category book covers, or are referenced with BBCode in articles regardless of the image's permissions or assigned subscriber group. This makes it easy for material that you are trying to use explicitly for personal use to leak out to the public view and risk infringing on copyright unless you want to set your entire world to private which isn't a solution that is appealing to all users.
I often set all images to private when I add them until I get time to go over them to assess their copyright risks or wait to hear back on the artist's permission. Then I realized that all my images were being displayed to public view (even logged out and in incognito)! It seems that the only thing setting images to private does currently is prevent direct access to them from the https://www.worldanvil.com/i/<ID> endpoint and doesn't prevent any rendering at reference locations.
I feel as if the expected functionality here is that the rendering of private images should be blocked EVERYWHERE they are referenced and their Alt Text displayed instead unless the viewing user is in the appropriate subscriber groups to see the image.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
Blocking rendering everywhere a private image is referenced to users without access and instead displaying its Alt Text is a far safer manner to prevent the accidental infringement of copyright.
What are other uses for this feature request?
Allowing writers and players to use images for personal use while still being safe from copyright infringement on public worlds.
Follow up
Although it is always a great practice to credit the owners of work and I advocate for everyone to do so - I'd just like to add a note to remind people that (at least by US laws) simply crediting an owner/artist of material is not guarenteed protection against copyright infringement. When it comes to copyright law, context and other parameters matter ESPECIALLY when monetization is potentially involved.
This proposed feature is a FAR safer tool/utility for navigating and avoiding the murky waters of copyright without having to close off your entire world from the public.
