I don't think we need a new template, but agree with others that adding a general "connecting" prompt to the landmark/building and geography templates would be helpful. I also agree it would be good to add the landmark types "trade route" and "escape route".
Sometimes there can be a road that stretches for miles or is of great importantance to multiple lands, for example the great silk road from warhammer fantasy is a particular path that the lands of the east take to eventually if not attacked to find there way West to Trade. its importance is that its a common and one of the only routes that can be taken. it would be nice if people are able to make a list of particular roads whether important or an ill omen to traverse.
I understand why the devs don't want more template types but I do like the idea of a template that supports a linear list of locations / landmarks such as you would find on a road. Add another road to that list and hey presto, an instant crossroads. If it's not too greedy it would be very cool if each waypoint also allowed you to specify a distance from the previous one, although you could argue this is what maps are for... Apart from that list of connections, I'm otherwise happy with just using landmark.
I absolutely agree with what ddaniel said here, even something more general such as “route” or “path” could be incredibly beneficial, whether it has options for “trade route”, “tunnel” “rail line”, “escape route” etc. Etc. Or is more relegated to explanation in text it would still be incredibly helpful. And having options to add stops and end points would be so useful for connecting cities, buildings, or even planets for personal and audience reference.
Yessss! Just ran into this issue as I've come far enough with my world to consider roads.
So I don't think it should be a new article type, but expanding the landmark type to include "trade route" as a type ("road" is already an option), would be a good start. I would also suggest the addition of a prompt in the generic tab for "connected locations" (it would work identically to the "connected room" in the room tab).
It would help link each city, town and village giving a record of whom came into contact with who/what.
Yes! Like ddaniel said, there are lot of potential uses for this sort of template, outside of just roads. I would like it if the template would allow for as many articles to be linked as the user wants, not just two, so any city/town/etc. that meets the road can be linked. If necessary, start and end locations could be separate links/prompts within the template to emphasize them.
Could potentially be nice,-- an artifact template could be fun and help with what writing about these is like. Describing the various trade goods that flow, who does most of the trading, how it impacts the places around the route? Other travellers and what not. It's a good idea. That said, ideally, I'd like it to have some kind of functionality that lets you link various places along the route in order. Like, if you're in City A, it'll link to Landmark C, and then Landmark C will link to both City A and City B.
Ok, so I believe this suggestion has a lot of "other uses". The only article type that can function as something that connects two places is a Building article as a room that connects two rooms. However there are many other things that connect two things that don't have an article where this can be expressed without straight up text form. Apart from the roads and trade routes mentioned here it's: tunnels (both caverns and artificial), train stations (+metro and whatever else), portals, plane gates, and teleportation circles, bridges. Scifi: wormholes, gateways, ftl-routes, dimension gates, etc. None of these fit Building / room. While natural tunnels, worm holes, natural occuring plane gates, dimension gates fit locations, the other ones fit buildings (but not the room tab still!). I think the solution would be adding the connection thing to building (non-room) and to geography templates. It could display like "Connecting" then have the 2 links underneath. Roads would be buildings, trade routes (and ftl routes) would still not be fixed as they are more imaginary, but it would cover the rest of the things listed here.
I'd like to see this have a link to each city, town and village they come into contact with.
I would love this - especially if you could connect multiple locations/settlements with the road!
To me this is either a landmark if you are talking about a specific road / road network or a Tradition if you are talking about something like the Silk Road.
Highways & trade routes are major parts of an economy and can help with developing an organization's resources.
I would make those landmarks myself, since it's in the dropdown menu next to where you would input a title onto the article.
