annotations footnotes endnotes
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
Currently, when writing a manuscript, there is no real way to insert footnotes - adding has to be done completely manually, with no link between reference in the text and footnote text and some thought up formatting to make it roughly resemble a footnote. At the same time, footnotes would not only be interesting for classic quoting and referencing, but also as a supplement, clarification, translation and especially stylistic device (e.g. to add small anecdotes and notes on worldbuilding - as known from the Discworld books, for example).
How does this feature request address the current situation?
Allowing for footnotes for individual scenes (simple "footnote" variant) or for entire chapters (more complicated "endnote" variant) would open up a wide range of stylistic possibilities, especially if the numbering of footnotes could be done automatically (analogous to other word processing programmes this would simplify the creation and management of footnotes, but could make implementation more difficult, at least at chapter level.
The Team's Response
I do not think we can have both automation and manual entry working together but footnotes as a new entry and display location can certainly be added.
