Adjustable increments (Day / Month / Year) for Timelines Timescale Mode

User Interface (UI) / User Experience (UX) · Timelines · Created by SilasCodes

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

For some uses (such as RPG campaigns), the Timescale view is not practical, since all events that happen in the same year will be grouped together. I know that the List Mode exists, but I like how the Timescale mode presents the passage of time between events.   If viewers could adjust the increment of the Timescale Mode to Years, Months, Days, or Hours, the timeline would render events more tightly or more broadly apart.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By allowing users to "zoom in" / "zoom out" while viewing the timeline, they could choose whether they want to view long or short periods of time.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This feature would be useful for any timeline that includes many events in the same year.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! Such a feature would require incredibly complicated calculations to run behind the scenes to account for the arbitrary amount and durations of months, days, and other time units in any world that can be created. We're closing this for now because we're not in a position to implement that now, but we might look into this for a future long-term update.   That said, you can use Chronicles, which include granularity settings for viewing the timeline. Timelines in timescale mode also group events in the same year into a stacked event that you can click to get a detailed timeline of that year.

Im also experiencing this for my world history. the world progresses relatively quickly and years are twice as long as years on earth, so the timescale mode is more or less useless as it stands for me right now.

Would add a lot of practicality to timelines. An ability to see the timeline from an overview down to a daily or even hourly format would be awesome.

I feel like this would be really useful for writing stories, too. Love the timescale mode, but having a smaller scale option would be amazing!

Like others have said, being able to set the timescale like you can with Chronicles would be the cherry on top of a fantastic upgrade. Larger timescale like decades and centuries would also be great.

It would be neat, but in my opinion not as an option to zoom in / out for users, but just have a setting that lets you select days, months or years as the granularity and then always render it based on that.

The new timescale mode is beautiful and I dearly wish I could use it, but all of the major events in my timelines take place within one year. Whether the timescale is zoomable or the increment is selected during timescale creation, a closer-in version would be immensely valuable.

omg yes. My main complaint with the new timeline is that its set to how big it is. Some of my timelines span millenniums and some 50 years. I would love to be able to adjust it manually.

With a *seamless* zoom. Sometimes days is to narrow and months to broad. Sometimes half-centuries are appropriate. Events can use importance to hide things that don't fit in the number of columns.

I would prefer the units to be an option for the timeline that is set by the owner/editor. And I realize that the browser limitations for how big the timeline is would affect the number of events you could have. I love the list mode, but there are some timelines where I want to use the lanes feature of timescale, but need a smaller unit (like days or months).
