Origins- Wes Part 1

Wes leaned back against the wall of the tavern. He leaned his chair back on its back two legs and sat with his hat pulled down. They had been at this island of.. Huh.

“Aye Sassy, what was this place called again?’ Wes asked his captain.

The crew were all celebrating a recent raid on a Marine trade ship. They got drunk on the fine alcohol that was on the way to a nearby Marine outpost. His captain, Sassy Talahasse turned from the party to Wes. Sassy wore a beard with no mustache, for family reasons, and a grizzled look.

“Think it was called Torrent?” Sassy said, thinking it over.

Right, they had been on the island of Torrent for a few months now, enjoying the prizes of their raids. Sadly, their time here was coming to an end. As is their way, they planned to leave this place for greener pastures. They planned to meet up with Eas back in the grandline, the South blue had been quite a treat to this group.

The door to the tavern opened, showing a boy with green hair and a cowlick. He used the term boy, yet he was an adult in his own ways. Wes watched as the green haired boy crossed the bar towards the bartender who did not mind the pirates party. Everyone had dismissed the boy immediately, but Wes spotted it instantly.

The boy spun, drawing twin guns from his hip and aimed them at Sassy. Wes sighed, what a fool.

“Sassy Talahasse, your bounty is mine!” The boy yelled out.

Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang.

Sassy wasn't the type to die easy, it was part of the reason Wes followed him after all these years. His Observation Haki wasn't as strong as Wes’s, but it was strong enough to spot the pattern in this boy's shooting.

Wes watched in the future. The boy was outlined in gray, his future self acting before his present self. The four shots were fired haphazardly. Only two of the shots actually came close to hitting Sassy, but Sassy had a similar ability.

Gray, the color of an undefined ability. Wes had gotten used to these here in the Blues. Most people took time to learn their Haki color, but those without any training or Haki at all appeared gray to Wes. This idiot thought he had the talent to take Sassy’s bounty?

Sassy tilted his body ever so slightly, the four shots flying past him and into the back of the tavern. Only one shot hit anything of note, and that was the one that went through the center of Wes’s hat.

Wes looked at his hat in dismay, throwing looks up swiftly between his hat and the shooter. The shot was good, was that really an accident?

Sassy held a hand, telling his crew to leave this to him. Moving swiftly forward Sassy struck. The first punch landed before the shooter could even process the information. The stomach was the choice location, an uppercut that hit into the ribs from the gut. The shooter gasped as his lungs were forced to release all air. The second was a punch into the cheek, sending the shooter sprawling across the tavern. He flew across a table top, then hit the floor with a grunt.

Sassy advanced on the boy. He cracked his knuckles as if to say ‘I'm just getting started’.

Wes learned forward in his seat as the boy got to his feet. He looked around him, realizing that he had dropped his guns from the first strike. The boy then stared down Sassy, raising his fists to fight.

The boy lasted only another few moments before being pummeled by the captain of the Cowboy Pirates. His body laid on the floorboards, struggling for breath.

“Tie him up.” Sassy said, wiping the boy's blood from his fist.

The boy stirred. He lifted himself from the floor. “I aint done yet pirate scum!” He yelled out.

Sassy turned back to the boy, a smile crossing his lips.

The next hit came from an unexpected target. Wes stood, one foot in the air from where it had hit the boy square in the jaw. The boy fell to the side, blood dripping from his lip. Sassy looked at Wes in confusion, but Wes continued unperturbed.

He wasn't sure why, but something inside him liked this kid. Wes grabbed the boy's green locks and lifted his head. Wes crouched so he could stare the boy in the eyes.

“Boy are you some kinda idiot?” Wes asked. “What in hells made you think you could take down old Sassy here!”

“Who you calling old!” Sassy called out in frustration.

“You ya hairless lipped bastard.” Wes said, Sassy giving a little laugh. “Now, what made you think you could take on my captain?”

The boy spit blood in Wes’s face. “The right any man has in this life, to kill scum pirates.”

Wes saw it. The eyes of this boy were fiery, what was the reason behind this boys actions? He tossed the boy to the ground hard, getting to his feet.

“Tie em up.” Wes said, a few members of the crew moving to follow orders from their captain's first mate.

The boy was tied outside the tavern, his arms bound behind his back in a way he wouldn't escape, attached to a trough the horses drank from. The Cowboy pirates resumed their party as if nothing had happened, yet Wes chose instead to approach his captain.

“What will we do with him?” Wes asked, the bar quieting around him. When the Captain and First mate spoke, everyone listened.

Sassy finished off his frothy drink, wiping the foam from his lip and stood to face Wes. “What we always do to bounty hunters. He came to kill, if a man is willing to kill he must be ready to be killed.” The answer Wes had expected. “What were you thinking?”

Wes took a breath. “We recruit him.”

The crew laughed, all but Sassy. “Why would we let him into our crew?”

“Nothing.” Wes said with a cheeky smile. “He is a shit marksman, but kids got some spunk don't ya think?”

Sassy smiled. “Yeah he does.”

“Give me two years.” Wes said, holding up his fingers. “After that, I will make him something worth joining our crew.”

“Two years?’ Sassy said, looking around at the rest of the crew. “You going to teach the boy Haki?”

“No.” Wes said. “Ill teach him how to be a true gunslinger.”

Sassy looked Wes up and down. “His life was forfeit, now it is yours. Do what you want, two years, after that you must return to the crew, boy or no boy.”

Wes smiled. “Thank ya Cap.”

He made his way out to the green haired boy who had been struggling against his ropes violently. Sadly, the Cowboy pirates knots were unbreakable.

“What's your name boy.” Wes asked.

“Cherry J Boot.” The boy said, emphasizing the J. “Bounty hunter, pirate killer.”

Wes smiled. “Name is Wes T Urn.” Wes said.

“Western?” Cherry said curiously.

A punch to the top of his head.

“Why does everyone say that?” Wes said, annoyed.

“The hell you want.” Cherry said, a lump forming on his head. It was hard to tell the new one from the ones Sassy had given him.

“Do you know the price of attacking my captain?” Wes said.

“Do your best!” Cherry said. “I wont die without a fight I tell you what!”

Wes smiled. “Why my Captain?”

“He had a large bounty.” Cherry said.

“Who you beat before this huh?” Wes asked. Cherry rattled off a few pirate names. Wes stared in disbelief. “Are you serious? You take down a few beginners who barely have bounties and you go for my captain? One of the greatest pirates in the grandline? You truly are an idiot.”

“Who cares.” Cherry said. “I didn't kill him, but I will try again, you pirate scum deserve to die.”

Wes smiled, then he drew his gun, placing it on Cherry’s forehead. Cherry was firm, ready for the bullet. “You tried to kill my captain, making your life forfeit. However, my captain has given me another option. You can have your life, but for the next two years you work for me, you get that boy?”

“I ain't no boy!” Cherry yelled out.

“We got ourselves a deal?” Wes said, pulling the gun back, and offering an open hand instead. “I'll teach ya how to use those peashooters you got.”

Cherry eyed the hand. “I can't shake it, hands bound. But I'll do it, if you will make me a true marksman.”

Wes smiled. “Sounds like we got ourselves a deal.”
