4. With Open Arms

Varris, Andraste, and Jester visited the church to Avalon the following day. There, they saw the refugees of war receiving what aid they can from the church before encountering General Gael’toyrn’s secretary, Barry. They learned that the General intended to return to Duford later that day and proceeded to loiter around town while they waited out his return. During that time, they explored a more abandoned yet affluent part of town, the old residences of the town’s former lords. Later that afternoon, the trio returned to the church for their audience with General Gael’toryn. The General provided Varris with the Cloaks’ location within Duford, in return musing that the town’s independence from the larger factions may hinge on how they fare with troubles in the near future.   The following day, the three again returned to the nearly abandoned part of town, visiting a house that acts as a cover for the Cloaks’ base of operation. Gaining entry, they received a welcome from LeVast, an old acquaintance of Varris. After clearing some of Varris’s questions about his family, and past events, LeVast provided him with a chance to return, which Varris accepted. With a new assignment, Varris, Andraste, and Jester tracked down an individual working for the Daggers, a rival thieves’ guild, that had been sabotaging the Cloaks’ operations in the area. Grappling and cornering the thief, Varris attempted to talk him into simply leaving. With hesitation, the man could only state his lack of choice in the matter, as well as hinting at some ulterior motive of the Daggers. However, before he could divulge any further information, he began to convulse in some strange fit and then mutated into a fiendish creature. The party struggled against the monstrosity before Jester at last struck him down. Gathering the body, they returned to the church to Avalon, attempting to remain discreet, before once again having an audience with General Gael’toryn.
"The Cloaks are a family after all. And we never turn our backs on family."
