Journal 29: The Rat King Rises

Seemingly too late to stop the Rat King from rising, and with time running out, our heroes scrape together every ounce of determination left in them to stop this evil.

Created by Wren for the Valdorin campaign

General Summary

Mirror mirror on the wall

We move on to one of the few rooms that aren't explored yet. It contains a mirror, with two words engraved on it: Blackfire and Cammora. The mirror sucks Wren inside it. When trying to get him out, several other creatures get out first; a mosquito-like creature that Naiur smashes with his shield, a woman with a golden spear, that in trade for it makes Naiur give his oath to protect a certain (possibly long-dead) entity: Queen Napaka. A giant creature that seems peaceful, but hurts your brain when you look at it is tricked back into the mirror by Naiur. Lastly, Naiur releases Biff Widelance, a friendly black haired man.

Tails

While Naiur, Biff and Rael rest up in the mirror room, the rest of the team climbs op on the room ceilings from the pathways and see where six big, fat rat tails that hang from the ceiling go: into the middle of the central cave. We can't see much; a dark fog hangs in the room. We start to cut the rat tails; every time one is severed, a terrible scream fills the the dungeon. Each tail make the screams worse; after a time, a voice start to talk to us, trying to get us to stop. After all tails are severed, and most of the team is severely exhausted by the screams, we enter the central room. Small rats cover the ground feet thick! The center contains a skeleton with rat tails in its eye sockets. Spooky! And eww!

D-rats

The skeleton sits up, and the mist intensifies. The rats en masse surround the skeleton. They attack! We hold our ground, back to back. The rat monster attacks from the black mist, catching us by surprise. Wren goes down! Harvey gets him back up. Shynt uses a potion of fire breath to great effect, not only roasting rats everywhere but also clearing the black mist a little. The Rateton uses the black mist to his advantage to strike from different angles. He also scoops up rats from the floor and eats them, presumably to heal up. Raff also makes an appearance again, and dies. After a lot of hide-and-seek and stab-and-skewer we manage to destroy the monstrosity.

The Rainbow Serpent

In a sort-of-vision, Ichtaka talks to us. We see the dungeon as it once was, a temple to Ichtaka. Wren swears his loyalty to Ichtaka! All hail Ichtaka, the Rainbow Serpent! His book contains several names to check out: Keliope Helene, Jean-Pierre Lebas de Fenelon-Chaussy d'Edouart, Randal Ludwig, and Nathaniel Richfield. Our vision returns and we turn to the problem at hand, which is that the dungeon is collapsing. We run back to the prison cells, and release the satyr and owlbear. The team (sans Wren) doesn't want to release Jean-Pierre. Wren, leaving last, drops the prison keys on the floor, hoping that Jean-Pierre might escape as well but without angering his teammates. We hurry back to the coin door and go through. Happy the ordeal is over, we make camp. The coin door is closed again. As the count-down in Wren's reaches its end, Naiur sneaks towards the cave-in to scout. He finds there are some guards patrolling! They are Free Men. We manage to kill them before they kill us.

Your new god has arrived

During a much needed rest everyone hears chanting; after a while it stops and the screaming starts. This event is now known as the massacre of Respit's Quarry. We then hear a voice, declaring that our new magister has arrived. It is Morbelgion!   .
