Religion: Doctrine of the Drowned Throne

Overview

Azurlith is the luminous heart of the oceanic world—a city carved from living coral, sung into being by elemental harmonics and sanctified by the will of Queen Thal'vanna of the Drowned Throne . Hidden deep within the abyssal cradle of the Velthren Trench, the city pulses with bioluminescent energy, ancient song, and the ever-present flow of The Oceanmind.

It is said that the waters around Azurlith think, remember, and dream. To dwell here is to live within a living thought of the sea itself.

Cityscape & Architecture

Azurlith is a city of light, memory, and motion—unlike any surface city. Its towers are grown from living coral, which glows with soft bioluminescence and reshapes itself over time. Streets are currents, guided by enchanted kelp rings and ley-tuned shells. Music and magic guide travel as much as vision does.

The city is layered in tiers based on depth and function:

  • The Coral Crown: The uppermost region—home to embassies, tide-cloisters, and memory-pools accessible to surface envoys and pilgrims.
  • The Harmonic Shells: Mid-city where artisans, scholars, and spellweavers live. Crystal domes tuned to different frequencies serve as both residences and resonant temples.
  • The Deeping Flow: The lower tier near the Trench Rift—more sacred, where only Tidebound, high clergy, and deepkin may dwell.

Currents are magically regulated, and living conduits called Streamspirals carry residents and goods throughout the city.

Key Locations

The Drowned Throne

Azurlith’s spiritual and political core—a palace-temple grown from sentient coral, songstone, and deep-sea glass. It breathes with Thal’vanna’s elemental aura, responding to her moods and will. Its walls shimmer with oceanic visions, sacred glyphs, and echoing tidehymns. Audience chambers, sanctums, and oracular pools spiral around the Queen’s living throne.

The Deep Vault

A sealed, sanctified archive housing ancient relics, enchanted scrolls, and imprisoned leviathans from the Age of Itharyx. Only Tidebound scholars, deepwarden clerics, and Thal’vanna herself may enter freely. Rumors whisper of a sleeping shard of Itharyx kept in the lowest chamber.

Tideglass Market

A sprawling, ever-changing bazaar where surface trade, planar wares, and magical goods are exchanged beneath layers of flowing currents. Bioluminescent bartering shells pulse with value, and rare goods are auctioned through harmonic bidding.

  • Vendors include coral golems, selkie traders, and air-breathing mages in waterglobes.
  • Voidglass relics, dream coral, and surface trinkets are highly prized.

Culture & Society

Azurlith is a harmonic civilization, driven by resonance, reverence, and rhythm. Citizens communicate through blended languages of Aquan, gesture, light, and magic.

  • Music, especially tidechanting and shellsong, plays a central role in law, ritual, and memory.
  • Art is alive—mosaics shift with mood, coral blooms respond to prayers, and monuments weep salt when tragedy is remembered.
  • The Oceanmind is ever-present. Many citizens meditate or drift into partial communion to gain insight or release emotion.

Defense & Military

Protected by natural trench walls and living coral sentinels, Azurlith is further defended by:

  • The Tideguard – Elite warriors who patrol the current-veins and city perimeter.
  • Leviathan Wards – Deepbound glyphs that repel ancient predators and planar incursions.
  • The Queen’s Wrath – A secretive enforcement arm that answers only to Thal’vanna, enforcing divine will and cleansing heresy.

Mystical Features

  • The Spiral Dome of Memory – A communal dream-temple where citizens can revisit ancestral visions or consult the will of the Oceanmind.
  • The Singing Eel Gardens – A district of sacred eels whose songs echo divine prophecy.
  • The Abyssal Choir – A sunken amphitheater where tide-harmonies are performed to awaken or commune with elder sea spirits.

Notable Events & Traditions

  • The Moonfall Chorus – Held beneath twin-moon tides, this sacred rite sends songs to the Astral Deep in hopes of stirring Itharyx’s slumber.
  • The Driftmask Festival – A celebration of identity and transformation, where citizens wear enchanted coral masks and trade roles for a day.
  • Arrival of the Tidebound – Each year, newly chosen Tidebound emerge from the Drowned Throne and ascend to the surface world. Their departure is marked with sacred current dances and ceremonial offerings.

Whispers & Lore

  • It is said that Azurlith was grown upon the bones of the first Leviathan, and that its soul slumbers beneath the Deep Vault.
  • Some believe that a forgotten Tidebound rebel hides somewhere within the city, pursued by the Queen’s Wrath.
  • Others claim that Thal’vanna’s court doesn’t end at Azurlith, and that dream-projections of the city appear in the depths of sleeping minds around the world.
