Snakebait
In a time long ago, Snakebait surely did have another name, but by now it is all but a distant memory for the perpetually grumpy, short woman. She rarely talks about what brought her to the Rangers of Hillswatch, other than joking about how she has bad luck following her. Several scars are a testament to his, but it has also led to her being a formidable melee fighter, skilled with healing herbs.
Joining the Rangers provided her with the opportunity to not only use her skills to earn a living, but to also stay on the good side of the laws and society. Hell, she even got recognition for it! Snakebait had always mistrusted authority figures, but here, Shae with the prying eyes entrusted responsibility to her, and acknowledged her abilities and achievements. Out of habit, Snakebait had always tried to hide what she did, but Shae made sure she got the recognition she deserved, and soon she was a respected member of the Rangers and the city.
Her bad luck never left her, though, and it was on one of the patrols she led that Marvan got mauled. Everyone agreed it was not her fault, her decisions were agreed upon by all, and no one could have foreseen things happening like they did, but still, Snakebait blamed herself and refused to take part ib patrols afterwards.
In the end, it was Marvan yelling at her that he'd rather have died than see her let herself go over something that was a risk every single ranger here was taking that made her snap out of it. Still, she was not the same anymore, and quite thankful that Shae never asked her to take another patrol command. Once, another ranger challenged Shae on that and asked her whether she distrusted Snakebait over bad luck. Shae calmly responded that she couldn't trust someone to lead who had no faith in their own leadership, and that if Snakebait was willing to take up a leading role again, she would be happy to let her. It was then that Snakebait realized how appropriate her nickname for Shae really was - her prying eyes really saw a lot more than most, yet she used it for good with her leadership.
In the end, her bad luck responsible for her nickname ended up mawling her body too. A snakebite and no reliable anti-venom at hand caused her left leg to become lame, effectively ending her career in the wilds. Still, well-regarded as she was, people sought her out for advice on healing herbs or training with the dagger. And Marvan suggested she tried her herbal knowledge in new ways and helped him out in the kitchen of the tavern he established.
In the end, though few people noticed, Snakebait and Marvan became more than just friends and colleagues. Despite having dealed a rough hand ny life, Hillswatch proved to be a turning point and allowed the self-described "old battleaxe" to find her home.
