Birth & Baptismal Rites

Mothers are attended during birth not by midwives, apothecaries, nurses or doctors, but by local women who have birthed themselves. They often bring pressed flowers and aromatic, colored powders as gifts. Children are christened at two weeks, with a mixture of colored flour, ink, and oil. This is attended by close family, and often a Society representative.

Coming of Age Rites

Presentation to a local Society representative to be declared an adult. Typically at fifteen years. Families who can afford it may hold small celebrations afterward. The newly-minted adult will ideally be betrothed within four months, if female, or eighteen, if male.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Funerals are typically disposal-by-bonfire. They are open/public affairs. Usually overseen by a Representative.   There is simply no space for spare bodies in An-Kerrar.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

A rounded stomach, cheek or chin.   A beauty mark above the brow.

Gender Ideals

A woman must be able to clean, to stretch resources, to find and serve food when there is none. She must be able to convince the howling stomach that it is full. She must be meek, demure, and never alone with a man other than her husband. She must swear her first allegiance, as must her husband, to The Society above all else. A man must be strong and hard-working. He must have stamina and grit. He must bring home food and money for the family, by any means. He must cherish his wife, and notice no other. He must never be alone with a younger woman, other than his wife. He must be decisive, but above all, he must be loyal and obedient to The Society, even at the cost of himself or his family.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship is rarely public. Most advice and expectations on the subject are shared by parents to their blooming daughters or hopeful sons. Generally, the quality of the courtship matters less to a woman than his ability to provide, and to a man, his prime concern will be a woman's etiquette, and the resources available to her family.

Relationship Ideals

Same-sex relationships are outlawed by The Society, deemed "inefficient," and therefore traitorous. Relations outside of marriage are deemed "unwise" or "unsafe" and therefore traitorous. Above all, though, there are three core values in an ideal relationship: That the couple love one another, provide and sacrifice for one another, and raise children.
