Drow

Basic Information

Anatomy

Drow bear a close resemblance to their Elven cousins with few distinct differences. Drow tend to have very dark purple or dark blue skin and white or pale yellow hair. Their eyes are very pale, often mistaken for being completely white like some Tiefling, in shades of pink, pale lilac, silver, and blue. They also tend to be slightly smaller and thinner than most Elves.

Biological Traits

Fey Ancestry

Because of their Fey ancestry, Drow are capable of casting spells innately and have resistance to the effects of charm spells.

Restless Beings

Like other Elves, Drow do not need to sleep to get their rest, instead they go into a semiconcious meditive state for at least 4 hours in a day and get fully rested from that. In this state Elves do still dream, these dreams can even be mental exercises for them. After resting in this way, a Drow gains the same benefit a Human, or any other race, gets from 8 hours of sleep.

Genetics and Reproduction

Drow reproduce in the same way that other Elven species reproduce.   Udadrow tend to be selective in their reproduction and will mostly only reproduce with other Drow.   Aevendrow and Lorendrow are much less selective than Udadrow and will partner and reproduce with anyone they end up with. Although Aevendrow and Lorendrow are more free with who they reproduce with, many still shy away from having children as they are scared that the many misconceptions about Drow will affect them negatively in life as it has with them.

Growth Rate & Stages

Drow, like all Elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as Humans. But the Elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth and as such in Elven terms adulthood is truly reached at the age of 100.

Ecology and Habitats

The Udadrow have built their civilization in the depths of the Underdark, spreading to both the upper and middle areas and living amongst or lording over other species that also made the Underdark their home. From centuries of living beneath the surface of Xalvion they have evolved to not be hindered greatly by their living situation.   The Aevendrow, sometimes known as Starlight Elves, tend to live in the Northern regions of the world like Sangaleg or underneath high mountains. Many of their cities are built of or within ice and snow. After many centuries from being split from the Udadrow and living in the frigid cold, Aevendrow have lost their enhanced Darkvision but are now no longer sensitive to sunlight like their cousins and they have developed a resistance to the cold.   The Lorendrow, sometimes known as Greenshadow Elves, make their homes in Southern regions within vast jungles and forests such as those found in Tudesk. Lorendrow are essentially the Drow equivalent of Wood Elves and are quite in tune with nature after many centuries spent above ground amongst the trees and grass, because of this Lorendrow are able to cast a few natural spells instead of the spells that Drow are usually born with and have no sensitivity to sunlight and have lost their enhanced Darkvision.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Although the various types of Drow are all of the same race, centuries of evolution have birthed slight differences between the groups.

Udadrow

Udadrow are usually dark blue, dark purple, or grey in complexion, their hair is pure white or a very pale yellow and their eyes tend to be a very light color, so light that they look completely white at times.

Aevendrow

Aevendrow are usually a lighter blue, purple, or grey color in their complexion, their hair still remains white but will sometimes have streaks of blue in them or will be completely pale blue, and their eyes are actually completely white sometimes.

Lorendrow

Lorendrow tend to look very similar to Wood Elves, they're usually more copper than their cousins in complexion with a few traces of green and their hair tends to have streaks of green or brown within them, and their eyes might even be a pale green or brown as well.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Udadrow

Udadrow live all over Xalvion beneath the surface in the Underdark. Their homes in the Underdark were mostly scattered around the Upperdark and the Middledark, reserving the Lowerdark to scouting parties and those who are being punished.   Udadrow usually build their cities in places underneath or within mountains, large hills, and valleys, preferably within those that already have caves systems.

Aevendrow

Aevendrow tend to live in far Northern regions and upon and within high mountains. Many make their homes on the mountain tops near Dwarvesville and the various mountain tops of Belia, some even make their homes in Northern Norumia and Macanhia.   Aevendrow usually build their cities within the ice and snow of their homelands prefering to stay above ground unlike their Udadrow cousins.
Lorendrow
Lorendrow make their homes within jungles and forests. Although there are many forests and jungles all over Xalvion, Lorendrow like to stay secluded from others and try not to spread too far as a whole, because of this most Lorendrow can be found in the vast jungles of Tudesk and some forests within Fehamabia and Partisia.   Lorendrow usually make their home in treehouses atop large looming trees and sometimes even within them if the tree is large enough.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Accustomed to living in the depths of the Underdark, many Drow are able to see very well in the dark, better than most other races.   However because of many centuries living in the Underdark, many Drow are very sensitive to sunlight to the point where it makes it hinders their vision greatly.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

The Cult of Lolth

The main religion for most of the Udadrow, this cult is dedicatied to Lolth, the Spider Queen.

Common Myths and Legends

  • Drow are all xenophobic and racist. This is only very partially true. It is mostly the Udadrow who despise other races and creatures and even among them the level of racism and xenophobia varies.
  • All Drow are evil. This is not true. Only the Udadrow are truly evil in alignment as they worship Lolth, the Spider Queen but even then there have been individuals who have strayed away from such path.
  • Drow are demonic/cursed Elves. This is not true. Drow are only a subspecies of Elves who have adapted to living underground with no ties in their lineage to demons or curses.
