The Roil

To the north of Tigerlily Island and west of Adoris lies an area of the ocean known as "The Roil" due to the extreme weather events which can occur there. Most sailors seek to avoid it, but there are a brave few who travel these sea lanes. Most who travel hail this area hail from the Adoris whaling fleet, seeking Black Whales in their winter hunting grounds.
The Roil is dominated by one large cyclone, referred to as "The Eye", which creates a contant bombardment of high winds and rains in the area. The Eye rarely moves from its location, but smaller storms can spin off from it, which can travel to the northern coast of Wyrring.
Those sailors which brave the North Sea all have various stories regarding the sights they've seen in the crest of waves only illuminated by the crack of lightning. These stories are fantastical, with sightings of mermaids, dragons, or sea monsters. One of the more common stories is of ships nearing destruction only to be greeted by Elara, Diantha's Keeper leaping over their hull. With the resounding crash of her landing, the storms always part and the crew finds themselves in calm waters on the other side. However, many believe this to be a tall tale, as many sailors have nearly identical stories, despite never sharing a voyage together.
Many scholars have debated the origin and continued strength of the Roil, with most believing it to be either caused by a series of natural ocean currents, by some long-forgotten spell cast by a powerful wizard, or the continued worship of the giants of Tummult to a storm god.
