Samospak: the Triumph of Business

In Welkwu, companies and other organizations of business extend beyond venues by which a hopeful prospect can accumulate wealth. They are integral pieces of its history, the energy source into which the nation's vast trade network taps, and the reason why the minor faction has maintained its independence for a century. Even so, nearly every position or entity can be purchased in this realm, and inevitably founding members that have supported the economy from the outset are absorbed into newer conglomerates. It's cause for commemoration, but not necessarily for mourning.

The very first instance of assimilation under the modern government was the purchase of the Aitsai Mining Company by Burden Metalwork Industries. The latter had wanted to standardize its supply chain, and the former struggled to transport its ore on a punctual, consistent basis. BMI was constructed after the city state's formation, and onlookers viewed the upstart with optimism yet suspicion. To improve its reputation, Burden hosted a grand festival in the town square, available for all the public. They brought the oldest chief officers of AMC and gave them seats of honor, while wantonly giving away samples of their product. Art was commissioned to capture the best moments of their joint cooperation. It was a tribute to Aitsai's past achievements, and a promise that BMI would respect the legacy of its predecessors. The festivities were planned for a week, but extended into the early morning several days later.

The young enterprise was instantly beloved by the people, and each following venture wished to copy that success. This celebration was mimicked so frequently that any merger was expected to host a jubilee of sorts. So much was generously donated that warehouse stock was usually left uncollected. Pomp, circumstance, and magnanimity were not required for what the populace considered a true "Samospak:" simply the sentiment of genuine goodwill, from the youthful to the venerable.

Foreigners often wonder why Welkwu's citizenry has such a high opinion of corporations, higher than love of municipal administration or adherence to political ideologies. To explain, the visiting Keyrityi author Tekre Vartak once described it thusly:
"The common denizen doesn't dream in the slums. These great titans of commerce and manufacturing allow the poor and downtrodden to rest upon their shoulders, free of charge. From there, the helpless view ancient times behind the giants' backs and imagine a bright future over the giants' chests. What a perfect slumber. If only our institutions had hope like this."
